I would recommend keeping your canvas at less than 400x400 for better results.
Use the pencil brush for sketching stages, fine details and refinements
Use the brush one to block out larger areas
The advantage of pixel art is that it is like vector graphics: You can expand it as much as you want once finished without introducing artifacts as long as you use the Nearest Neighbor Algorithm to increase the resolution.
The examples above were all done using these 2 brushes exclusively, that means they work well as erasers too.
