Talkin' RiffTrax: GYMKATA

"Gymkata!" Yes, the source of the well-known MST-era callback is finally getting its proper place in the pantheon of Riffed Movies.

Mike, Kevin and Bill finally got around to riffing this gem of 80s cheese, and they're back to talk about it in this episode of Talkin' RiffTrax. Enjoy!

I bought it and will watch it soon. I'm still recovering from "The Visitor".

Oh my gosh, I’ve been curious about Gymkata for DECADES, and have come close a few times to actually watching it but never did. And NOW, I get to see it AND with riffs from those responsible for me knowing about it in the first place?? You’ve knocked an item off my bucket list for me! ❤️

I recognized the goofy king right away as the "Body by Charles Atlas, face by Mel Brooks" guy from Cinematic Titanic's riff of Legacy of Blood. Buck Kartalian.

For some reason, I'm always surprised Elliot Gould isn't in this.

You'd think it's an Eastern European country. . But Gymkata Guy clearly says he recognizes the country as bring in the Hindu Kush region, which would make it at that point surrounded by either Pakistan or the Soviet Union. If one wants it to make sense—and making sense is critical for a movie like Gymkata—this would presumably be one of the many small Indian kingdoms the British ruled indirectly during the British Raj, which was then given independence and foursome reason not absorbed by Pakistan. Maybe they didn't want to deal with the crazies. It also apparently has remarkably pale people, no signs of Indian culture, and I guess more Mughal influence since the leader was a Khan. There you go. Now the movie makes total sense.
