Bill's favorite works of fiction for pandemics

Hello Patreon, Bill here -

Since we're all stuck inside together as our society collectively deals with the COVID-19 coronavirus, a few of my favorite works on this sort of subject sprang to mind, and I wanted to record my thoughts on them for you.

I hope this audio dispatch helps make your self-quarantine a tiny bit more enjoyable.

Great update, Bill, nice to know you guys are out there and experiencing all this craziness right along with us.

Sean-Casey King

I'd add Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman and the latest The Mist movie from Stephen King gets really good into they psychology of panicky people. Contagion is just too real for me as is The Road, the butcher cellar scene was too much.

Paul

I'm glad you mentioned Laura San Giacomo, Bill. She was very good in 1989's "Sex, Lies, and Videotape". I wonder what happened to her. I hope she didn't run afoul of Harvey Weinstein or someone like him.

Rufus Rodgers

I like Bill, too! There! I said it and I'm glad!

Karl Hamann

Absolutely! I watched “Contagion” with my mom and sister, then lent it to my brother and his wife to watch. I highly recommend it right now. I might mention that something I really enjoy watching when I’m actually sick is the original series Star Trek episode “The Immunity Syndrome” in which they fight the giant invading virus. I’m, like, “YEAH!!! Blow that &@$!%# all to hell!”

Wendy Burke

Enjoyed listening to to this. I've also think Carpenter's The Thing is appropriate here, considering you cannot tell who is infected.

Robert Daniel

Don't think there is such a movie. Couldn't find one on IMDB.

JAMES MCDAID

This may be a controversial statement, but I'm just going to say it: I like Bill. Whew, It's such a relief to get that off my chest. Seriously though, he's always going above and beyond to engage fans and just seems like a swell fellow. Thanks for these periodic posts. I look forward to them whenever I get an email.

Noah K. Sturdevant

It is SOOOOO good. Though I read it when it first came out last summer and it was much less freaky and creepy to be reading at that time.

NinjitsuPrincess

Definitely recommend the book of The Stand, and there's a TV remake supposed to be out this year, not sure what'll happen to that... World War Z is a good read in an apocalyptic vein, and works well as an audio book if you're so inclined.

Ian Davenport

Somehow, re-reading Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" might not be a good idea, right now, but you might try riffing the old b&w 30's version!

Karl Hamann

Thanks Bill, and greetings to you and all Traxians from day 7 in my hotel room in Sydney. Loved The Stand (book), and Wanderers sounds interesting. Also enjoyed John Birmingham’s self-aware tribute to The Stand, called Zero Day Code. Agree these books make the current situation seem ok by comparison!

Thanks for this, Bill. I have WANDERERS on my list, but I'll likely read it when it feels a little less "on the nose." Love to all the Traxians, and the crew at the Mothership.
