Hello, dearest DripTraxians!
The trailer for RiffTrax Live: SPACE MUTINY just dropped, and we thought it'd be super fun to do something a little more special for it. To that end, we're thrilled to give you an exclusive insider's view into how these things get made. The proverbial riff sausage, if you will.
Usually, the script is already in progress by the time the deadline arrives for "trailer lines" - which, as you might expect, are the riffs that we'll send to the folks at Fathom Events for inclusion in a trailer. (We're very creative.)
When going through the movie ahead of time, we make notes about which scenes we think will work great in that context, and write those riffs first — even if those jokes may end up being rewritten later on. Astute observers might have noticed this with previous live shows.
The lines then get recorded by us, and the resulting audio is sent off, along with the movie scenes and time codes for placement.
BUT — one thing you might not have known, is that each riffer records multiple takes of each joke, as well as more jokes than are probably needed for a 30 second trailer. Theaters also have content guidelines of their own, which means some scenes may not make it into the trailer at all. The result is that a good number of jokes — or variations of them — all end up on the cutting room floor, never to be heard again.
That's why we're pleased to present, for the first time ever, a compilation of all of the takes of every trailer line we created as part of this process for Space Mutiny. Our resident video editor Casey June put this together, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we all enjoyed making it.
Who said it best? Let us know in the comments!
