As I wrote in the first WIP for this part, harsh midday lights are awful. At least in Finland the sun doesn't shine exactly from above, but still the light is extremely strong and sharp, so the shadows are way too dark and crisp, and there's barely any gradients available.
It's most often better to shoot early morning or evenings, but as life is, usually a midday shoot is more convenient for both parties.
This is especially difficult when using an extremely large aperture, like I tend to do – f/1.4 here. I had to push the exposure time to something like 1/8000, which is ridiculously high, and still photos seemed to be overexposured.
An ND filter would help, but I've come to notice that any light shining upon it from the frontside of the lens tends to make the image quality very bad, even with expensive filters.
