2025-06-15 19:41:37 +0000 UTCIt’s a bit frustrating that it’s hard to portray the king as an active participant in the conflict. I know their strength isn’t the battlefield, of course. But it also doesn’t seem to be magic prowess, it doesn’t seem to be war strategizing either. All that’s left then is diplomacy and charm. Which I suppose is what allowed the king to obtain the support of all the races in the first place. But how much of that is him and not just his station and resources? Being inserted into this story as a king, it’s hard to just sit by and accept that everything is happening -away- from you, you’re not an active participant in most of the narrative. You’re not being courted by others romantically. The suitors don’t even seem that taken with your charming earnestness or kindness either (assuming that -is- the qualities we’re supposed to have.) They like us because we’ve maintained peace. But we don’t even seem to be exhibiting any magnetism either. I would assume that the suitors would at least be flustered with our words or actions. Maybe we say something witty or bright, or kind that takes them aback, or displays where the king is so kind and soft-hearted that it makes them want to protect him (even if it’s platonically). It is extremely impressive that you can do 5-6 characters and all of them be recognizable from each other. And that is a delight to listen to, but boy do I wish we as listeners could be a bit more of a protagonist. Maybe it’s too much for it to be lampshaded and beaten to us over our heads by gassing up our ability to rally people, though. Sometimes less is more. All that said, if charm and kindness is what the king is good at, I have to assume he gives some major puppy dog eyes, and is clever, assertive, and wears his heart on his sleeve. I also assume that he gives affection freely, sometimes holding on to someone’s hand slightly longer—smiling at all who need it, and holding someone’s gaze in conversational moments that may make them think he thinks the world of them. I’d like to think all the suitors have a bit of crush on him. Not to be acted upon, but enough to want to be around him as friends or allies.
