Final version for chapter 6, and Steam.

With development for chapter 7 moving now into the production phase, it's time to release this final version of chapter 6 (v0.6.4).

Light of my Life (0.6.4)

What's new with it?

First of all, there's no new story content. If you played chapter 6 there's no real need to get it.

What it does have is additional checks built in to prevent loading of mods that are out of date. Those of you that followed me during the release will remember I was not pleased that a shoddily made walk-trough mod used by some in chapter 5 could result in corrupted saves in a way that caused serious problems in chapter 6, especially since I do take a lot of care to ensure save compatibility over the chapters.  With this check now in place the game will just refuse to load with mods that have not properly merged their sources with the latest game updates (or at least, have been touched by the mod maker), hopefully sparing users from these issues in the future, and me from support questions and the occasional irate player blaming me for those problems.

Further more, there's another boatload of typo's fixed, one or two minor bugs, some graphics issues fixed, and a bunch of grainy renders from the first two chapters replaced. There's still a few more of those in there, but the most glaring ones are now addressed.

Finally, there's now a wheedling button on there (and a message during at the end credits) to wishlist it on Steam. Which brings us to the next topic.

Hang on, did you say Steam?

Yeah. Please, wishlist Light of my Life on Steam. It'll help boost visibility for the game enormously there. Even if you are never going to buy it from steam, you're still helping out by getting more people to become aware of it.

Here's a link.

Yeah, yeah, in a minute. I have questions first. Steam, Naughty?

That's right. Steam opens up a whole new audience for the game, one that usually doesn't frequent our neck of the woods. It'll be interesting to see if it can grow an audience there, and I've found I don't need to change how I make Light of my Life right now after all, which is the most important thing for me about it.

What will this change for Light of my Life?

Nothing really. I'll continue doing what I'm doing. The game will be developed as it always was, and released as before to everyone when it's done. Steam will just be another place where it'll be available. Kinda.

Wait, you said kinda. How kinda?

Alright. Steam has some rules and quirks. One: you can't link to other platforms. So the steam version will not have links to Patreon, Subscribestar, Itch.IO or BuyMeACoffee. It also skips over the (4th wall breaking) pinkyswear scene at the end of chapter one, and the airpirates scene, because those scenes reference those platforms.

Since there's no way to have the patronage or pay-what-you-want business model on Steam, it'll have a fixed price. Which brings us to rule two: the version on Steam cannot be cheaper anywhere else. So I'm gonna bundle it with a few wallpapers (sfw and nsfw ones) and that'll be the Steam special edition.

In summary, the Steam version is minus two non-canon scenes, has a set price, and comes bundled with a few wallpapers.

Hey, looking at this page, it says something about Light of my Life going out of early access in 2023? What's that about?

Oh, right. For now, I've decided to keep Light of my Life in Early Access on Steam until it wraps up, and Steam really wants me to put some sort of an end date guestimate up, even though I have no clue yet myself what it'll be.

I just put in what I do know, to wit: I don't expect to wrap up before 2023. Which is technically correct and therefore the best kind of correct. Expect that field to be updated when I figure it out myself.

Any chance of any of us getting our hands on some Steam keys?

Eh, sure. I don't see a reason why not, if there's a demand. I haven't really looked to deep into that part, and since there's a whole bunch of yous I'd like to automate that process if I could. Give me some time to figure stuff out and see what Steam has to say about how that can and can't work, and I'll come back with some options.

Anything else?

That's about all there's to it at this moment. Haven't set a price yet, haven't set a release date either. For now, I'm planning to let it sit a bit and rake up some wishlist entries, and have chapter 7 be the first release on Steam (along with all the other places it releases usually), if the wishlist numbers are high enough for it to make a bit of an impact.

Wishlist numbers?

Which brings me back to wishlisting it. Like I said, please wishlist it there even if you have no intention of buying it, because it will help a lot with the visibility. Here's that link again.

Comments

I feel Steam is even more permissive than Patreon, so if the game passes muster here, it will definitely be fine there.

I know steam is allowing adult games now but I would have thought some of the subjects of this game would be too much for it.

So, I finally got around to finishing chapter 6, and all I can say is "wow"! Truly worth the wait!

Yeah, I like GOG as a platform a lot. I'm not sure if they're allowing for adult only stuff on there at the moment though, and I've heard tell the curation on what they let on is pretty strict.

Okay, just for you I'll log into Steam.... *sigh* such a tremendous chore.... ;) But really, I haven't logged into Steam in years, I really do hate it. Put it on GOG though and then we're talking.
