It had been almost a year since that day when the world was forever changed. Society continued to evolve to deal with the variety of life forms that now comprised the expanded definition of humanity.
The government expanded labour laws to ban job discrimination based on species, except in cases where the new form was fundamentally incompatible with the old job. Employers were required to make reasonable accommodations, such as redesigned workstations, much like they had previously done for humans with disabilities. Of course, some companies grumbled about government overreach and claimed they should have the choice to hire only humans. Still, with almost a third of the electorate now being demi-humans, few politicians were willing to alienate such a large bloc of voters.
Kate and Yoko had been offered a return to their old jobs under this new legislation, but they both declined, declaring they were much happier at the cafe than at their previous employment.
Extended unemployment benefits and job retraining programs were available for those like Hina, who could no longer work as a makeup artist because her arms and hands were now wings. Hina had been depressed at first, not at being a harpy but at being unable to continue the job she loved. She had tried retraining as a call centre clerk, learning to operate a modified keyboard with her talons and using a mouse attached to her wingtip. Hina found being cooped up (pardon the pun) inside all day was not for her. When she happened to overhear Kate musing about a delivery service for the cafe, she eagerly volunteered, offering to work on commission. Kate laughed that anyone who worked for her would be paid fairly and put her on salary. Hina quickly fell in love with the new job as it gave her ample opportunity to take to the skies, flight being a harpies greatest pleasure.

Over the summer, Umako joined a newly formed polo team composed entirely of centaurs. Since centaurs were a relatively rare breed, the team was coed. One of her teammates was Yukio, the boy who had come on so strongly to her during their disastrous date. He blushed bright red when he saw her at the tryouts. “Yeah, you should blush, you creep.” Umako thought of saying but chose instead to ignore him. It appeared Yukio had other ideas, though.
“Hi, Umako,” he said shyly, even more self-effacing than their first meeting.
“Skip the act!” Umako hissed, “That innocent boy routine isn’t working anymore.”
“I deserve that and a lot more,” he replied, bowing his head. “How I acted on our date was inexcusable, and I won’t blame you if you hate me. But, and I mean this as an explanation and not an excuse, I had no idea how strong the stallion hormones would hit me, and I wasn’t prepared to handle it. I’ve learned a lot since then. If we’re going to be on this team together, I hope we can get along. Truce?”
“Look,” Umako replied sternly, “I always work with my teammates for the good of the team. I won’t let what happened between us hurt our game. But be clear: We are not friends, and I want nothing to do with you outside the team.”
“Fair enough,” Yukio replied, “That’s all I ask. By the way, I see you are dating Hiroto. He’s a good guy, and I wish you all the best.”
As Yukio walked away, Umako wondered for a moment if she was being too harsh on him but quickly concluded he had to do much more to prove himself before she could trust him again.

For Umako and Aya, it was now their final year of school. Most of their classmates had returned, but some had moved to specialized schools geared toward their species, and some were now being home-schooled.
A few had simply dropped out of school when they discovered that their new abilities gave them unique job opportunities that did not require high school graduation. Aya had seriously considered it. She was dismissive of her parents' demands that she finish school. Umako was brought to tears at the idea of losing her best friend. Aya told her not to be so dramatic; they would still be friends, but Umako’s pleas that it wouldn’t be the same not seeing her all day at school convinced Aya to stick it out for another year.
The social cliques at school hadn’t changed much from the year before, with one notable exception. Masuyo, formerly head of the Mean Girls, had been demoted to sidekick after the Event when Serass had changed her from a Queen Bee to a Drone. It appeared she was not considered even sidekick material any longer, as the group was now shunning her. Aya laughed that it served her right for being such a bitch, but Umako felt sorry for her.
Masuyo’s downfall was driven home to Umako on the first day of school. She had gone into the restroom to wash her hands and heard a quiet sobbing from one of the cubicles.
“Who’s there?” Umako asked, “Are you OK?”
“Leave me alone!” a trembling voice replied.
“Masuyo? Is that you?” Umako said, recognizing the voice, “What’s wrong?”
“As if you don’t know!” Masuyo shouted, turning from self-pity to anger. “Your friend Serass did this to me. I’m a monster! Everybody hates me. My friends won’t even talk to me anymore.”
“Hey,” Umako responded gently, “I don’t hate you, and I’ll talk to you if you want to talk and not just lash out.”
There was a long silence, and then Umako heard the cubicle lock click, and the door opened. A red-eyed Masuyo emerged, looking more resigned than angry.
“You’ll talk to me?” she asked tentatively, “But you’re one of the girls I used to bully all the time.”
“I know, and at the time, it hurt me a lot,” Umako said, “But since the Event, I’ve been called a monster more times than I can count. I’ve learned that when someone insults me, it’s not really about me; it reflects their own insecurities.”
“Yeah,” Masuyo said uncertainly, “But you’re a sexy centauress, and I’m a freak among freaks, a bee girl with a dick. One that I can’t even use if I don’t want to die.”
“Well,” Umako said harshly but with a touch of sympathy, “You brought that on yourself by picking on the wrong person.”
“I know,” Masuyo sighed, “I’ve learned my lesson since then. All the people I used to think were my friends have been calling me ‘dickgirl’ and ‘one-shot wonder’ and stuff even I won’t repeat. If I could take it all back, I’d behave much differently, but now I’m stuck like this for the rest of my life.” She began weeping again.
“You could try apologizing,” Umako said.
“What?” Masuyo asked, confused.
“You could try apologizing to Serass. She’s harsh with anyone who crosses her, but I don't think she is evil despite being a demon. If you apologize and are sincere, she might change you back.”
A look of panic appeared on Masuyo’s face.
“Are you crazy!” she screamed, “I’m not going anywhere near her. Don't you remember on the day of the event how she smiled when she said she had killed her sister? She’d probably turn me into something even worse.”
Umako realized that fear was not unreasonable. While she had gotten to know Serass better through frequent visits to the cafe over the summer, she mainly relied on Kate’s assurances that Serass had a good heart. It was evident that Serass was a powerful demon, but Umako could only guess the extent of those powers. Umako had long suspected that Serass was the “Texas Avenging Angel” who had instantaneously eradicated a mob of hundreds of people storming a demi-human internment camp. If she could do that, what else might she be capable of?
“It's your choice,” Umako said. “If you change your mind, let me know. I’ll go with you for moral support.”
“Serass has an uncanny way of reading people, and if you’ve truly changed, I think she’ll be kind to you,” she added, sounding more confident than she felt.
“Well… I’ll think about it,” Masuyo allowed uncertainly.
“Yes, do that,” Umako said reassuringly, “And if you need someone to talk to, call me.”
“Thanks,” Masuyo replied, “I could really use a friend.”
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Umako said wryly. “You’ve got to prove yourself before I’ll call you a friend.”
—----------------------------------------
That evening, Umako was hanging out with Hiroto. His parents were on an overnight trip, so they had the house to themselves. Aya and Kaito were expected to come over later.
Hiroto was brushing out her coat and tail, a grooming chore he frequently helped her with. At first, she hesitated to ask him to because it was a lot of work, but he insisted that he wanted to do it. She enjoyed his gentle touch but found it odd that occasionally he would bury his nose in her pelt and take a deep breath. She had worried that action indicated some kind of horse fetish. When she asked him about it, he explained that while her coat had a different scent than her skin, both were uniquely Umako and just two distinct aspects of what he loved about her.
Umako told him about her encounter with Masuyo earlier that day.
“I’m not surprised,” he said after a thoughtful pause. “She’s an only child. I’ve heard that her parents are very success-oriented and don’t have much time for her. From what I hear, a nanny mostly raised her—a very strict German lady. She never socialized with other kids until she started school. Not knowing how to interact with her peers, she adopted the bossy attitude from her only role model.”
“I remember,” Umako agreed, “We were all jealous of her for arriving at school in a chauffeured limo and wearing fancy clothes. I’m sure that didn’t help.”
“Anyway,” Umako continued, “I think we should give her a chance. Maybe start by sitting with her at lunch?”
Hiroto gave Umako a passionate kiss as his sign of agreement. “Yet another thing I love about you is your ability to see good in everyone,” he whispered.
“Well, don’t stop now,” Umako laughed, kissing him back while her hand reached into his trousers.
—----------------------------------------
Their lovemaking was brief but intense. When they were done, Umako sat on the floor with Hiroto lying naked against her flank. Hiroto was enjoying the feeling of her coarse hair against his bare skin while Umako stroked his head. He was thinking how he’d be content to stay that way all night when his reverie was interrupted by the doorbell ringing.
Umako jumped up in surprise, throwing Hiroto flat on the floor. She quickly threw on her shirt, and while Hiroto scrambled to don his clothes, she answered the door. As expected, it was Aya, holding a bag in her lap, accompanied by Kaito.
“Hmm, smells like someone’s been having fun in here,” Aya commented as she rolled into the room. Umako blushed a bit as she recalled what an excellent olfactory sense Aya had acquired from the Event.
Hiroto, scrambling to adjust his clothing, came over to greet them.
“I brought refreshments,” Aya grinned, opening the bag to reveal bottles of sake and shochu.
“How did you get those?” Hiroto asked, surprised.
“I asked this guy outside the store to buy them for me,” Aya shrugged.
“You asked him?” Umako said accusingly, “Was there singing involved?”
“Maybe a little bit…” Aya replied in a small voice, “What’s the harm, though? I paid him for them. I even gave him a bit extra for his trouble, so it's a win-win, right?”
Umako could only glare at her. Serass had warned Aya about abusing her power; while not a major crime, Aya had induced a stranger to break the law. Umako worried how much farther she’d be willing to press it.
Hiroto took the bottles into the kitchen. He put the bottle of sake in a pot of water on the stove to warm it and brewed some green tea to mix with the shochu. He laid four glasses on the table and invited everyone to pour their libation.
Umako and Hiroto poured themselves small drinks of sake. Kaito mixed a small measure of shochu in some green tea. Aya poured herself a considerable measure of straight shochu, chugged it down, and then refilled her glass to the same level. Umako gave her an enquiring look, but Aya just shrugged.
They all returned to the living room to play video games. The girls joined in for a while, playing as a team against the boys. When the girls consistently won, the boys decided it was time to switch to a one-on-one combat game, so the girls retired to the corner to chat. Along the way, Aya returned to the kitchen to pour herself a third drink. She was looking quite intoxicated.
Umako sat on the floor close to Aya's eye level. Aya glanced at the boys to ensure they were occupied, and then she whispered to Umako, “Sometimes I wish Kaito paid as much attention to me as he does to his video games.”
Umako gave her a sympathetic look and asked, “What do you mean?”
“Oh, it’s just that we seem to be drifting apart,” Aya replied, tears moistening her eyes. “When he was away at school, he texted me every day and couldn’t get enough of me when he came home. But over the summer, when we could be together all the time, he’s been spending more time with his bros than with me.” She turned her head away to hide the tears.
Umako didn’t know what to say, so she hugged and held Aya. Over the noise of the video game, she thought she could hear Aya say something quietly. Was she singing?
Aya turned toward Umako and kissed her.
Umako was surprised but didn’t pull away; she passionately returned the kiss. Aya was her best friend, but she’d never had romantic feelings for her, yet it felt right in the moment. A little voice in her head told her this was Siren magic at work, but she didn’t care.
The spell affected the boys as well. Kaito, his penis emerging from its sheath, was looking at Hiroto longingly. Hiroto, looking more confused than aroused, felt the pressure build in his trousers. He tentatively reached over and stroked Kaitos member. Kaito, in turn, undid Hiroto’s pants, releasing his erect shaft, still sticky from his earlier session with Umako. Kaito licked it clean and took it into his mouth. Hiroto found the sensation delightful and was surprised that Kaito had a better fellatio technique than Umako.
Umako knelt on the floor with Aya’s tail between her forelegs, her face buried in Aya’s pussy.
Kaito’s action quickly brought Hiroto to a climax. He shuddered in bliss and collapsed on the floor, embraced in Kaito’s flippers. The leathery texture of the flippers and the coarse fur on Kaito’s body was a novel, and not unpleasant, experience for Hiroto. Noticing Kaito’s not-quite-human penis, still fully erect, he grasped it in one of his hands and began stroking.
“That feels nice,” Kaito murmured, “But if you have a condom and some lube, I know something that’s more fun.”
Hiroto already had condoms. Given her ample proportions, he had never needed lube with Umako. He went to his parents' room to see what he could find.
Meanwhile, Umako’s tongue work had Aya in spasms of pleasure, gasping for air and her tail flopping between Umako’s legs like a fish out of water. Umako worried for a minute that Aya was having a seizure, but the look in Aya’s eyes reassured her that Aya was just having a lot of fun. The gasping and flopping slowly subsided, and Aya lay quietly with a contented smile.
“You do that very well,” Aya moaned happily, “Are you sure you’re straight?”
“I guess I just know what a girl likes,” Umako replied, still uncertain why she had done that and why she had enjoyed it. She rubbed her lips and found some of Aya’s scales stuck there.
After a few minutes, Hiroto returned with a bottle of ‘Secret Lovers Anal Lubricant’ and a perplexed look on his face.
“I found this,” he remarked with a little shudder, “I never thought my parents could be into kinky stuff.”
“Yeah, “ Kaito agreed, “It’s weird to think of our parents having a sex life, isn’t it?”
“For sure,” Hiroto agreed. He didn't even want to consider the implications of the strap-on dildo he'd seen resting in the drawer next to the lube.
Kaito instructed Hiroto to get on his hands and knees in front of him. He applied a generous amount of the lube to Hiroto’s anus and to the condom he had donned.
“OK, I’ll start slow,” Kaito reassured him, “You may feel at first like you’re having a big dump, but I think you’ll like the sensation.’ Hiroto felt Kaito’s fur pressing against his buttocks. As Kaito entered him, Hiroto initially felt like he was having a bowel movement, and then an intense but pleasant sensation overwhelmed him as his prostate was stimulated. He also got the urge to pee, though he knew his bladder was empty.
Aya had recovered from her orgasm and was ready to return the favour. They found the best position was for Umako to lie on her side with her rear toward Aya. As she lay down, her tail flicked Aya’s face.
“Hey, watch it!” Aya sputtered.
“Sorry,” Umako apologized, lifting her tail out of the way.
“Wow, girl, you’re quite a mouthful,” Aya exclaimed as she examined the size of Umako’s clit.
“Hey, when you’re with a centaur it’s go big or go home,” Umako laughed. “Don’t be afraid to use your arm as a dildo, too. I can take it.”
Concentrating on pleasing Umako, Aya barely noticed the loud barking that she recognized as Kaito getting off or the quiet moaning of Hiroto as he experienced an exceptionally intense orgasm. Those sounds were soon followed by a whinnying sound from Umako, accompanied by her legs kicking. Aya rolled out of the way of Umako’s flailing limbs.
With all four of them satisfied, Aya fell asleep in Umako’s arms while Hiroto cuddled up with Kaito.
—----------------------------------------
In the morning, Hiroto was the first to awaken. He carefully disengaged himself from Kaito and went to Umako to rouse her while trying not to disturb Aya. When her eyes opened, he made a shushing gesture and whispered for her to meet him in the kitchen. Umako rose and followed him.
“What the hell happened last night,” Hiroto exclaimed. “I’ve never been attracted to boys, but I couldn’t help myself. I know I wasn’t drunk; I only had one small glass of sake.”
“It was Aya’s doing,” Umako answered, her face reddening in anger. She stamped a front hoof, a mannerism Hiroto had learned meant she was agitated.
“Aya? What… How…,” Hiroto stammered, “How could it be her doing?”
“She’s a Siren,” Umako explained, “When she sings, she can make people do things. But I never thought she’d do something like this.”
“I don’t know what to say,” Hiroto fumed, “I feel violated. What could make her think it was in any way ok to make us do that?”
“I’m not sure,” Umako said pensively. “She was very drunk, and she was sad because her relationship with Kaito seems to be unravelling. I don’t think you guys were the target. I believe the spell was meant for me; she’s had a crush on me for a long time. You just got caught in the crossfire.”
Voices from the living room alerted them that the others were awake. Aya was crying.
“What do you mean you’re just not into me anymore?” Aya sobbed.
“I’m sorry, “ Kaito said quietly, “I’ve been torn by something for a while, but it all fell into place last night. There’s a guy at school that I’ve gotten very close to. I’ve been telling myself it didn’t mean anything, that it was just a way of finding release when I was away from you. But last night, I looked at Hiroto and was instantly turned on, yet I felt nothing when I looked at you. I’m sure that was my soul telling me I’m meant to be with a man.”
“No! No! That was my doing!” Aya pleaded.
“No, it’s not you,” Kaito consoled her, “You’re a beautiful girl and a great person, but I can’t ignore such a clear sign.”
Aya’s sobs took on a rhythmic, almost musical quality. Umako rushed into the room and slapped her. Kaito fell backwards as Umako’s body came between him and Aya.
“Haven’t you caused enough trouble already?” Umako snarled at Aya.
“But… I was going to fix things,” Aya pleaded, “I was going to tell everyone to forget about last night.”
“You can’t undo what’s happened,” Umako replied, “Don’t make it worse by trying to manipulate us even more.”
“I think it’s time for you to leave, Aya,” Hiroto interjected, “You’re not welcome here anymore.”
Aya started to protest, but Umako grabbed the handles of her wheelchair and rolled her out the front door.
“Just go home,” Umako told her, “We can talk about this more when I’m not so angry.” She closed the door and returned to the living room.
Kaito’s gaze moved from Hiroto to Umako and back, unsure where he stood with them.
“Look, I’m very sorry about what happened last night,” Kaito said, “I’m not saying I wouldn’t make a move on Hiroto if he were unattached and inclined that way, but I know neither of those is true, and I have no excuse for crossing those boundaries. I don’t understand why I did. Could the drinks have been drugged?”
Umako smiled. “It’s truly not your fault. There was magic at work, and neither of us blames you for what happened. We were all willing participants at the time.”
“Magic?” Kaito said, not comprehending.
“Yes. Umako explained, “If you’re going to associate with Aya, it’s only fair that you know she is a Siren and can compel you to act against your will. I would have warned you sooner had I suspected she was capable of anything like what she did last night.”
“Wow!” Kaito gasped, “I had no idea. After last night, I was pretty sure we were done as a couple, but now I don’t want to go anywhere near her.”
“I think that would be best, at least for now.” Umako agreed as she escorted him to the door.
Umako returned to Hiroto, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’m so confused,” she confessed to Hiroto, “I love Aya. She’s been my bestie since we were little kids, but I don’t know how to forgive her for this.” She sat on the floor and patted the space in front of her.
“Can you just hold me for a while?” she asked. Hiroto sat down and embraced her.
—----------------------------------------
Aya returned to an eerily quiet home. Her shouts of ‘I’m home’ got no response. Rolling into the kitchen, she discovered all her family sitting around the table, apparently in a trance. Serass was sitting on the kitchen counter eating a plate of sashimi.
“What's going on? Is this your doing?” Aya asked Serass accusingly.
“Of course,” Serass casually replied, “You’re just in time. I was about to order your sister to drown herself in your pool.”
“Go ahead, sweetie. Dunk your head underwater in Aya’s pool and leave it there,” Serass said to Mika, pointing at her with the chopsticks, which still held a piece of tuna between them.
Mika slowly rose from the table and shuffled off toward the pool.
“What!” Aya shouted, moving her chair to block the door to the backyard. Mika fought, trying to get past her.
Aya began to sing, then ordered Mika to sit down and stop trying to reach the pool, but it didn't work.
“Don’t waste your breath, dear. She won’t obey you; a lilim’s command is absolute,” grinned Serass.
Mika tried with all her strength to get past Aya. Luckily, Aya’s siren’s tail was strong enough to block her path.
“Why would you do this?” Aya screamed at Serass. What has she ever done to you?”
“Why?” Serass laughed, “Because I’m a demon, and I can. It’s no different than what you did to your friends last night, using your power to get your way.”
“But I didn’t hurt anyone! You're going to kill her!” Aya protested, still battling to prevent Mika from getting through the door.
“Dead, sexually assaulted, it’s all the same to a being like me,” Serass answered, “It comes down to using a lesser being to satisfy a whim. You either respect a person’s free will, or you don’t. You showed your true colours last night. Grant me the same privilege.”
“No,” Aya cried. If you want to kill someone, then kill me. After last night, I deserve it.”
“Deserve it? Whatever for?” Serass asked, “You were just using your natural abilities to play with inferior creatures.”
“No. No,” Aya wailed, “They’re not inferior creatures; they’re my friends. Or they were. I’ve lost my boyfriend. I’ve lost my best friend. All because I was stupid and drunk and scared of being alone. I wish I’d never been given this awful power.”
Serass’ demeanour softened.
“You really remind me of my daughter, you know? A long, long time ago, when she was about your age and not very aware of her power, she got angry at one of her human friends and yelled at him to go kill himself. We found his corpse a week later in his bedroom at Inasmont Academy. I know Freya still blames herself for that…”
Serass sighed deeply.
“I’m afraid that power is part of who you are. You have the soul of a Siren, and nothing can change that. You have an instinct to manipulate people to get what you want. To live among them, you must learn to control it. It’s not always easy to play by their rules when you are powerful, but if you want them to accept you and not fear you, it is something you must do.”
“I don’t want to control anyone,” Aya sobbed, “I just want my family and friends back. I don’t want my sister to die!”
“Oh, that,” Serass said absentmindedly, “Mika, honey, go sit down.” Mika stopped struggling to get through the door and returned to her seat.
“I can see your sincere remorse, but I won’t tolerate any chaos you cause by abusing your ability. I’ll let it pass this time. You will have to figure out how to make amends to your friends. Also, remember that I can feel when you use your magic anywhere, and I’ll be keeping an eye on you.” With those words, Serass vanished, along with her plate of sashimi.
“Oh, Aya,” her mother said, “I didn’t hear you come in. I hope you had a nice sleepover with your friends.” The family did not appear to have any recollection of Serass’ visit.
“It was… Intense,” Aya said, “I’m going to my pool. I’ve got a lot to think about.”
