Can we live without PNG files?
Added 2024-11-28 02:55:02 +0000 UTCSeveral issues with my token categories has been pointed out to me, as I work through the fixes I have to move the PSD files, the PNG files and the WEBp files to make sure the changes have been reflected in all the places.
I'm considering getting rid of the PNG files and only share the WEBP files. The WEBP are supported in all the VTT's now. They are also smaller in size but look just as nice. This will keep the transfers and downloads much faster.
Is there anyone that can think of a valid reason to keep both versions?
The only thing I can think of is for the kitbashers keeping them so people with editing programs that may not support WEBP yet.

Agreed with most here: Keep the PNG's. WEBP support in Windows 10 is bunk. Yes, the VTT's all support them, but we don't only view the files in VTT. Paint 3D still can't edit them (yet MS Paint can read them at least). WEBP is just not ready for prime-time on the Windows 10 Desktop. If you don't have other software installed, it's a poor experience.

2024-11-28 15:03:19 +0000 UTCThanks everyone, this may be the most commented on post yet. Next topic is Darkvision in DnD. :) Ok, so I am still thinking about options, I may encourage people to download the WEBP unless the really want the PNG files. I personally can't tell the difference visually between the two formats. I've posted a sample in Discord.

2024-11-28 14:22:36 +0000 UTC15 years ago people didn't want to move to PNG. Do what makes sense for you, it's easy enough to make batch changes.

2024-11-28 10:29:39 +0000 UTCReading up a bit, it seems that AVIF is intended to replace WebP, and fix the various issues it has. In particular, it says it has lossless compression, which I would be tickled pink to see some verified test results proving it. WebP however, I have zero faith in. Let's just say that that is an informed opinion, to be brief. ;) Until then, I'm sticking with PNG, which actually DOES do lossless. (not that it's needed most of the time).

2024-11-28 06:28:35 +0000 UTCI am fine with it, if there is a problem after trying it we can always discuss another solution.

2024-11-28 05:39:15 +0000 UTCGiven WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs where as WebP lossy images are 25-34% I'd say webP losses is the way to go here? That way we avoid the image degradation and save on file space. @Captan Blackwood: Assuming you're using Windows, you can simply install/enable the WebP Image extensions and choose an appropriate layout such as Large icons and view them in a similar manner to .png thumbnails. https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-previews-in-file-explorer-in-windows-11.2272/

2024-11-28 05:17:08 +0000 UTCAs long as they are lossless webp.

2024-11-28 04:42:28 +0000 UTCI quite like PNGs or JPGs since I usually scroll through tokens to decide what I want to use and can't do that with webp.

2024-11-28 03:39:14 +0000 UTCI am *quite* content to receive only .webp. The reality is, if I only have a .png, I open it in Photoshop and export it to .webp. To the poster above (Per), the file size difference on .webp and .png is MASSIVE. The difference in archive sizes for Fantasy (Tier 5) tells the tale: .webp -- 229 MB .png - 1.2GB This is why it is important for Devin to use only .webp. His download limit will be reached *much* faster by distributing art via .pngs.

2024-11-28 03:32:37 +0000 UTCI can live without the PNGs. I agree with what Per said above regarding the color dullness, but I don't think it's that big of a difference to justify all the extra storage space, but that's just one person's opinion. :)

2024-11-28 03:27:24 +0000 UTCI'm one of those people who uses an editing program that doesn't support WEBP. As well I've been using PNG for my tokens for years. So if I was forced to go with WEBP I'd end up with two formats and eventually for ease of use have to convert all of them to WEBP, which I'd rather not do...

2024-11-28 03:22:41 +0000 UTCI’d prefer png files. I compared a few webp and png tokens and thought that the colours looked duller in webp images. The file size differences were not particularly large either.
