Death is never cool, a good story however shouldn't hesitate to let it happen. However there so much sales point stuff to consider, before actually doing it... some brave story writers scared their audience away, by making a plot twist which is suddenly targeting another audience (or in case of death, probably losing the audience favouring this character).
