Mastodon 3.1.4

Hello friends! Since my last update, I've tagged a few small releases: 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and now 3.1.4. They add and improve admin tools, command-line tools, and change up how media files are processed and stored to be more robust. There are also lots of bugfixes including some security-related ones.

The illustration above by our go-to artist Dopatwo was meant to celebrate Mastodon crossing the 4 million registered users milestone, but unfortunately after some investigation I found the celebration to be premature (I wrote about it in more detail here).

Still, mastodon.social did also cross the 500,000 registered users milestone recently, so I figured why not release it anyway? The times right now are stressful and it might give people some joy. The illustration references the recent migration wave of users from Brazil.

As for what's coming next, after long deliberations I'm finally making progress on adding end-to-end encryption for direct messages in Mastodon. I've gotten advice from Keybase developers, I've gotten advice from Matrix developers, and I finally got an idea of what approach to take. It's a complicated endeavour but there's many good reasons for doing it.

I've got the server-side APIs for it done, but more work is required to make it work across federation, and even more work is required making an interface for it client-side, which is arguably where the bulk of the complexity of E2EE messaging lives.

Thank you all for supporting the project! ☺️

Sounds great! Thanks for your work. The instance I'm currently on is using 3.1.4 from what the version string indicates, all is working well as far as I can tell.
