Billy is assaulting the hay.
You could barely take the bridle off his mouth with how fast he was gulping it down. The attack roused Elly and Kroner from their peaceful sleep, but the horses didn't mind it.
They were ecstatic. As soon as he stepped into the barn, Elly neighed and lowered her head to sniff at Billy's ears before nibbling along his spine. Kroner hit his hooves on the ground in excitement and joined in, grooming Billy's right shoulder.
To your surprise, Billy didn't ignore them. Your old horse paused his relentless attack on the hay to sniff and bump noses with each of his friends, and only then did he continue his tirade.
For Billy, that's practically a declaration of love.
The three of them are content now, side by side. Elly chews gracefully on a blade of grass, Kroner sniffs the air, and Billy has half the hay supply in his maw.

I like to think that the three horses grew closer as time went on, and now, they're starting to see each other as part of a makeshift herd.
