Monthly update - November 2020

Hey everyone,

Somehow the slowest year of all time seems to be flying right by. I hope everyone had a healthy and productive November. A handful of new Texturelabs items this month… hope they provide you with some knowledge and design power!

-Dripping Paint Effect

This one might be my personal favorite tutorial so far. It’s a technique that I've always had half-worked out, but I decided to really dig in and figure out how to get the displacement map just right! Such a fun effect to apply to just about anything and see what happens…

-Fog and Text Portrait

More than anything, I wanted to illustrate just how useful Blend-If can be with smoke and fog elements. So many years wasted using Screen Mode! I also thought I’d throw something photographic in one of these tutorials and see if it might appeal to a broader YouTube audience.

-Cinematic Light Rays in Photoshop

The truth is, I’ve never known a single designer who uses Photoshop to create light ray effects. If you use After Effects, you know it’s a fairly simple effect to apply (most professionals use a plugin called Trapcode Shine). There’s just never been a good way to do it in Photoshop; generally, you’d export your file to After Effects, create the light rays, then import that to Photoshop. But I love a challenge! I spent 3 or 4 days experimenting and refining this technique specifically for this tutorial. And thanks to your interest in the channel, I can justify to myself getting that obsessive about a single thing in Photoshop!

-New Textures

Pretty good batch of new spray paint and ink splatter textures on the site. The spray paint text effect tutorial somehow is by far the most successful not the channel so far, but I realized there weren’t many subtle overspray and light spray paint textures on the site. Always nice to have a reason to do some spray painting. At some point here I’ll do a little post on my photography setup… it took a while to figure out how to get edge-to-edge razor sharp images, which are a necessity for the fine details of spray paint.

-December plans

I’ve got a few ideas for tutorials stacked up and will try to keep a good pace here. I’m also going to have to run through the site and do some optimizing so this stuff can start to show up in Google search results etc. I feel like the site and channel are just on the cusp of getting a wide audience. No matter what happens though, I'll always be especially grateful to you guys as the first supporters of this project.

Thank you!

Brady
