Our dining hall’s pastry chef was recently gifted a new recipe, one that had been discovered deep in the archives of our library by Graham, one of our student interns. After a few tries, the chef was successful, producing a buttery, flaky pastry with the consistency of a dense croissant, draped in a coating of sweet and delicate icing. One rare herb, sourced from a forest just a few miles up the road, imparted an indescrible, irresistible flavor to the dessert. Our chef named these new pastries “Pfatt Rolls.”
Sophomore Austin, on his way back from band practice, couldn’t resist the smell wafting from the dining hall as he passed by. He made a quick detour and bought himself half a dozen, barely making it past the a group of ravenous students who jostled each other to get their hands on more of the delicious dessert.
By the time he got back to his dorm, Austin noticed two rolls were gone; had they fallen off and he hadn’t noticed? He set down the plate and brushed his hands through his hair, noticing for the first time how sticky his fingers were. Had he … eaten the two rolls? Without even realizing? The walk between his room and the dining hall took less than a minute, there was no way …
His thoughts were interrupted as he felt a rumble in his pit of his stomach. Without thinking, he leaned over to grab the remaining Pfatter Rolls. He heard a plink as the button on his jeans liberated itself from his tightening waistband, a doughy belly releasing itself from under his tight tee.
In a daze, Austin brought the third roll to his lips, taking first a small bite, then quickly devouring the rest. No more! he told himself, though his protest felt drowned out by a glaze of sweetness enveloping his brain, and a strange sensation to keep eating. He wiped his hand on his straining jeans, grazing his growing love handle as he did. He barely noticed how the warm softness of his belly continued to rise at a steady pace. In a flash, his platter of Pfatt Rolls was empty. Better head back and grab some more, he told himself. His burgeoning belly led the way as he followed the sweet, buttery scent back to the dining hall.
… more, his thoughts echoed.
