When you need to fix the latch!

I know I speak about it a lot here on my Patreon page, but it is important, and I know that different pictures depict different angles of proper latching techniques. I snapped this picture because at the time my daughter did not have the perfect latch. In order to fix this latch, I needed to push up and turn out her upper lip, so it was sticking out more like a ducky. (Think all those annoying ducky lip selfies all over insta! Lol 😂)

The lips should be turned upward and outward over your areola not just the nipple!

Milk flows not only from the nipple but certain parts of the areola as well. There are many streams of milk and a good latch helps kickstart the flow so the letdowns can be abundant and satisfying for your baby so their little bellies are full of warm nutrient rich liquid gold.

When your baby gets a little bigger and as you learn together you’ll get more comfortable in your breastfeeding journey. Once you get your routine down things like this will happen and it’s ok. You’re baby will latch how they feel most comfortable and as long as your milk supply stays intact you should be good even when the latch isn’t perfect.

It’s NOT OK when your milk supply starts to dwindle because your child does not have the proper latch and is not extracting enough milk from your breast to drain the breast enough in order for it to make more.

The best way to ensure that you’re breasts are being properly drained and making enough milk is to pay close attention to your babies latch. When your babies latch is correct, they are able to extract enough milk, and fully drain the breast. When your babies latch is incorrect, it can lead to nipple trauma, painful feedings, and less milk. (Even mastitis)

Always make sure you’re drinking plenty of water staying hydrated and eating, vitamin nutrient rich foods to keep you and your baby healthy especially for the first six months of life or before starting solids.

If you are exclusively breast-feeding remember that your baby is getting everything they need from your life sustaining breastmilk so this advice is important to make sure that you make plenty of milk for your baby and you have the best Breastfeeding experience possible together.

If you’re worried about your baby having a shallow latch or anything about your milk supply, please don’t hesitate to contact your nearest lactation consultant to come out and give you a visit.
