Thankfully, along came Lilo & Stitch; and while it wasn't a mega-hit on par with The Lion King, it proved there were still a few years' worth of gas in the traditional animation tank. Lilo's humble girl-and-her-alien-dog-thing story shrugged off the style of previous Disney epics in exchange for a more unique vibe that makes this film an incredibly memorable feature within the vast catalog of Disney animation. On this episode of What A Cartoon Movie, join us as we say "aloha"—first at the beginning, then at the end—to 2002's Lilo & Stitch.

2025-08-04 05:31:10 +0000 UTCSo I can tell you all that Disney did make an animated movie that has a queer character who is not a cop and not someone that can be cut away from. The film Strange World from 2022 features a queer teenager who is part of the main plot and who very much crushes on a boy and has a subplot worrying about how he's going to ask a boy out. He's played by queer actor Jaboukie Young-White. If you're asking yourself "What the hell is Strange World?" it's a movie that I feel Bob Chapek essentially sent out to die without promotion strictly because it had queerness in it. It's a very dad-centric film, but it's worth checking out for a different kind of story and really amazing animation.
