PRI Chapter 9: How to Run a Prison Well with These Vermin
Added 2025-08-15 08:12:41 +0000 UTCOn the afternoon George left, Lind met his extracted B-level guard.
James White.
He had a square face with neat short hair, resolute eyes, stood 185 centimeters tall, and his muscles could fill out a large shirt.
Just looking at him gave people a great sense of security.
His resume also put Lind at ease.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who had served as a guard supervisor and instructor at Wayne Prison.
He was incomparably better than that fraud George.
After James finished describing his experience, Lind immediately agreed to hire him and made him the prison guard supervisor.
"Yes, Warden."
James didn't hesitate and agreed directly, as if he had been prepared all along.
Lind nodded, "Very good, James. Can you start work tomorrow?"
"I can start today." James spoke crisply and decisively.
Even after several years, his military habits remained with him.
Lind was somewhat surprised, "Don't you need to go back and notify your family?"
"No need." James shook his head, "Only my parents are in Val Verde. My wife and children are in Houston."
"Alright then."
Since James had no concerns, Lind naturally didn't want to delay.
He took out the list of prison guards and explained the current situation to James.
"In fact, our prison will face inspection from the state Department of Corrections the day after tomorrow. The current problem is that prisoners generally lack respect for the guards, and the guards don't know how to discipline prisoners. So I need you to quickly reorganize the guard team and let the prisoners know what fear is! What rules are! Can you do it?"
James didn't hesitate for a moment, "No problem, Warden. I was responsible for guard training at Wayne Prison and also handled surprise inspections from the state Department of Corrections. You can rest assured leaving it to me."
"Couldn't be better!" Lind clapped his hands. He needed someone who knew the business, "Then go ahead and do it."
"Yes!"
When James went out to complete the hiring procedures, Lind interviewed six more people in succession.
He finally approved three people.
They were:
Cook.
[Hook Ang]
[Identity: Cook]
[Rating: 29 (Level D)]
[Loyalty: 50 (Maximum 100)]
[Skills: Basic Driving, Basic Gardening, Intermediate Cooking, Intermediate Nutritionist]
Guard.
[Parker Zorn]
[Identity: Guard]
[Rating: 25 (Level D)]
[Loyalty: 50 (Maximum 100)]
[Skills: Intermediate Driving, Basic Taekwondo, Intermediate Marksmanship]
Doctor.
[Joe Locke]
[Identity: Doctor]
[Rating: 22 (Level D)]
[Loyalty: 50 (Maximum 100)]
[Skills: Intermediate Surgery, Intermediate Diagnosis, Basic First Aid, Basic Driving]
The hiring of these three people made Lind breathe a long sigh of relief.
These were all urgently needed positions, especially the doctor.
He finally didn't have to worry about treating prisoners after beating them up.
Logically speaking, interviews were the responsibility of the prison HR officer and didn't require him as warden to handle personally.
But Lind had just taken over the prison and was enthusiastic about everything.
Plus he could see attributes, so he took the interview work upon himself.
This led to HR officer Mary rolling her eyes quite a bit today, thinking Lind didn't trust her.
After interviewing everyone, it was already five o'clock in the afternoon.
Lind took advantage of the time before dinner to gather all the guards together.
Seeing the tall, strong, meticulous man standing beside the warden, everyone couldn't help but whisper among themselves.
"Who's that?"
"Don't know. Is he a new guard?"
"Why would a new guard call all of us together?"
"Haven't you noticed George isn't here?"
"Was he fired?"
"No way."
Hearing everyone's chatter, Lind frowned.
How could the prison be run well with these undisciplined vermin!
"Quiet!" He had to speak up to stop the talking.
All the guards immediately looked up at him.
Lind looked around and said seriously, "First, let me introduce a new supervisor!"
"James White, former supervisor at Wayne Prison."
He patted James on the shoulder, had him step forward, and continued, "Starting today, James will take on the responsibility of guard supervisor, responsible for training and evaluating all guards."
At this point, Lind paused, and James smoothly took over, "Everyone can call me James from now on."
Lind continued, "Besides James, there's also Andy Cock. He's been promoted to guard captain and will be responsible for guard attendance and prisoner supervision tasks."
Seeing everyone's eyes turn to him, Andy couldn't help but straighten his back and raise his head.
"Additionally, Carter and Cohen have performed well recently with positive work attitudes. They'll receive bonuses at the end of the month."
Carter and Cohen hadn't expected to be mentioned and became happy.
Other guards looked at these few with envious eyes.
Only a few sensitive people looked at Andy with somewhat unfriendly expressions.
"There's one more thing I need to notify everyone about." Lind paused for a moment, "An inspector from the state Department of Corrections will arrive at the prison in the next couple of days for a major inspection. Everyone must keep their eyes sharp at all times and not let any suspicious prisoner behavior slip under your noses!"
"Any guard who discovers prisoner activity can report to James at any time."
"If a prisoner indeed has problems, the reporting guard will receive a fifty-dollar reward!"
"But!"
Lind narrowed his eyes and scanned everyone with oppressive looks, "If anyone covers for prisoners, I will not only kick him out of the prison but also send him to court! Make him go to jail! Do you understand?"
"Yes." The responses were sparse and uneven.
"Say it again, do you understand!"
"Yes!" The guards shouted in unison.
That was more like it.
Lind stepped back and let James step forward to announce the pre-arranged surprise search.
"During today's bath time, everyone will split into two groups. One group will control prisoners in the bathroom, the other will conduct cell searches."
"Beds, pillows, toilets, shoes... everywhere must be checked, even the prisoners' assholes can't be spared!"
"Also..."
After James finished explaining the specific search procedures, he led the guards away together, returning to the prison block.
Lind, meanwhile, went to the central monitoring area to find the temporary repairman Jim.
"When can the surveillance be fixed?"
Jim, who was crouched on the ground organizing wires, shrugged, "Warden, it can be fixed tomorrow."
"Why did the surveillance break down?"
"Should be rats that chewed through the wires." Jim looked unsurprised.
"Alright, fix it as soon as possible." Lind gave instructions and left the monitoring room.
He naturally knew that in a newly built prison there couldn't possibly be rats chewing wires. The only one who could do this was undoubtedly George.
After making another mental note against him, Lind returned to his office and picked up the newly received notice from the state Department of Corrections.
It was about solutions for the computer Y2K millennium bug problem.
As everyone knew, since computers only used two decimal digits to represent dates, when systems dealt with cross-century dates, incorrect date and time errors would occur, causing various bugs.
All industries across America were now using computer systems, so how to handle this problem had become urgent.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons had prepared thirty-two million dollars to upgrade prison electronic management systems.
Border Prison was naturally included.
After reading the notice, Lind couldn't help but fall into contemplation.
Speaking of which, if the Y2K bug was used well, it seemed like he could make a small profit from it.
