HUN Chapter 9: Choosing the Ten Items of Equipment

The week-long boot camp came to an end amid tension and brutality.

From the initial twenty-plus candidates, through round after round of ruthless selection, only ten figures remained, still standing on this Rocky Mountain training ground.

Lin Yu'an was among them!

When Instructor Rick Hawk announced the final list of ten selected for "Alone" Season 8 with his signature booming voice and called out the name "Lin Yu'an," Lin Yu'an's face didn't show excessive joy, just his usual calm demeanor, but his eyes gleamed with confidence.

After the selection list was announced, the production team immediately gathered these ten lucky individuals and announced the official filming location for this season.

Executive Producer Mark Johnson stood before a huge map that clearly marked the vast regions of North America.

His finger finally landed on northwestern Canada, a remote area surrounded by deep blue lakes and continuous snow-capped mountains.

Mark's voice carried a hint of excitement. "Gentlemen and ladies, welcome to the battlefield of 'Alone' Season 8, Canada, British Columbia, Chilko Lake!"

The screen then played a short film showing a massive lake formed by crystal-clear glacial meltwater, surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains, with dense primeval coniferous forests stretching endlessly.

The footage occasionally showed glimpses of wild animals, agile white-tailed deer, cunning wolverines, and massive, intimidating grizzly bears!

Canadian grizzly bears can weigh up to 900 pounds, equivalent to about 450 kilograms, with an average body length of 2.3 meters. When standing on their hind legs, they can reach 2.7 meters tall, truly the lords of the deep forest!

"Yes, you're not mistaken. One of the most severe challenges you'll face this season is sharing this wilderness with the grizzly bears of this land!"

"Therefore, we can also call this season 'Alone: Grizzly Mountain'!"

The ten contestants present, even those who were experienced hunters, couldn't help but show grave expressions when they heard the word "grizzly bear."

These weren't just prey, but potential deadly threats!

Lin Yu'an's heart also sank slightly. Although he had learned some knowledge about dealing with large predators from Old John at the frontier farm.

But to actually survive alone for months in an area with such high grizzly bear density, the difficulty was unimaginable.

Mark Johnson showed an encouraging smile at the right moment.

"Of course, we believe that all ten of you are top-tier survivors who will definitely find ways to coexist harmoniously with nature and ultimately overcome the challenges."

"Next, you'll have four hours to choose your final ten pieces of survival equipment to take into the wilderness, based on the environmental characteristics of the Chilko Lake region and your own skills."

"Please note, this is crucial for your future survival. The equipment list provided to the production team must be chosen carefully!"

Equipment selection was a crucial element of the "Alone" program, directly related to contestants' survival ability and persistence time in the wilderness.

The ten contestants returned to temporary tents to begin studying the equipment list.

Lin Yu'an first calmly and quickly analyzed the environmental characteristics of the Chilko Lake region in his mind.

High-latitude mountain region meant low temperatures, large day-night temperature differences, long and harsh winters, making warmth the top priority! Plus grizzly bears roamed the area, so bear spray and safe food storage were crucial.

He first examined the equipment provided by the production team beyond the ten items:

1 pair of high-leg hunting boots, 1 pair of water shoes 1 belt 2 T-shirts 2 wool sweaters or wool shirts 1 wool sweater, 3 pairs of wool socks, 2 hats 2 pairs of gloves 2 sets of underwear 1 warm outdoor jacket, 1 rain jacket 1 pair of rain pants 1 set of thermal underwear 1 pair of gaiters 1 toothbrush 1 pair of glasses (with prescription proof), 1 personal photo 1 large waterproof tarp 1 multi-season sleeping bag, 1 fixed-blade knife, 1 double-sided whetstone 1 bear spray 1 water bottle 1 waterproof hiking backpack

After reviewing the basic items provided by the show, combined with his own skill characteristics, Lin Yu'an began choosing ten pieces of equipment he could purchase himself.

Each of his choices was carefully considered. In his mind, he quickly went through various sizes of knives, axes, saws, sleeping bags of different temperature ratings, waterproof tarps, fire-starting tools, cooking utensils, fishing gear, bows and arrows, and so on.

Finally, he organized 10 items:

A high-carbon steel forged multi-functional knife: This was the most important tool, used for cutting, chopping, skinning, self-defense, nail trimming, shaving. The blade must be sharp, easy to sharpen, and extremely durable.

A medium-sized felling axe: For chopping wood needed to build shelters and obtain firewood. He chose one with moderate weight, sharp blade, and sturdy handle.

A high-quality -30°C rated goose down sleeping bag (with waterproof outer layer): In high-cold regions, a good sleeping bag was key to survival. Temperature rating and waterproof performance data must be clear.

An extra-large heavy-duty waterproof tarp: Multi-purpose, could serve as shelter roof and ground cloth. He chose military green color that blended better with the natural environment.

A large magnesium fire starter: The most reliable fire-starting tool, unaffected by moisture.

A single-handled stainless steel pot with lid: For boiling water, cooking food, melting snow. Stainless steel was durable and easy to clean.

A fishing kit containing various sizes of fishing line, hooks, and small lead weights: Chilko Lake had rich fishery resources, this was an important protein source.

A roll of high-strength paracord: Extremely versatile, essential for building shelters, making traps, binding items, and more.

A pack of salt: Not only could prevent hyponatremia and electrolyte imbalance that could affect nerve and muscle function, but could also be used to cure meat.

For the final piece of equipment, Lin Yu'an unhesitatingly chose an American hunting bow.

He could carry 10 arrows: 8 regular arrows and 2 bear-hunting arrows. It provided the ability to hunt large game from a distance, though it required extremely high skill, but could also hunt small game.

He chose the sleeping bag and waterproof tarp twice, as Lin Yu'an believed they would be extremely useful.

Lin Yu'an carefully checked his list of ten pieces of equipment once more, ensuring nothing was missed. These items would be sufficient for him to survive in the Chilko Lake wilderness.

After providing the ten-item list to the production team for registration, unexpectedly, the production team gave all contestants a surprise!

They arranged flights for each contestant to return home to prepare these ten items and say goodbye to their families, then officially begin program recording!

On the flight back to Austin.

When Lin Yu'an dragged his simple luggage back to their apartment in Austin, Aliya, who had already learned the situation over the phone, was eagerly waiting at the door.

Seeing Lin Yu'an's figure, Aliya's eyes instantly filled with joyful light. She quickly walked forward, but Lin Yu'an stepped forward first to support her.

"Slow down, darling. You're a priority protection target now!"

Lin Yu'an's voice was full of affection as he gently embraced Aliya.

"You're back! How was the boot camp? Was there any danger?"

Aliya looked Lin Yu'an up and down, her eyes full of concern.

"Everything went smoothly, no danger at all. Don't worry."

Lin Yu'an smiled and briefly described the boot camp experience to Aliya, of course omitting the dangerous details.

Learning that Lin Yu'an was officially selected and had a week at home to prepare, Aliya was first delighted, but then came deeper reluctance about the approaching separation.

"One week... you have to leave so soon?" Aliya's voice was somewhat downcast.

Lin Yu'an pulled her into his arms and gently comforted her. "Seven days is already precious. I'll spend good time with you and the babies."

Over the next few days, Lin Yu'an not only took meticulous care of Aliya, accompanying her on walks and making various nutritious meals for her.

He accompanied her in talking to the babies in her belly and took time to go equipment shopping.

His goals were very clear.

High-energy, easily stored compressed foods, like high-energy compressed biscuits used by special forces and gel energy bars. These items were small in volume, high in calories, and could be life-saving during initial food scarcity or emergency situations.

He prepared quite a bit: concentrated chicken broth, mixed spice powder, butter hotpot base. In monotonous wilderness dining, just a little seasoning could greatly improve taste and boost morale.

He also purchased some specially-made fishhooks and high-strength fishing line. Although the equipment list included fishing gear, he wanted to prepare more, along with several rolls of extremely strong steel wire.

Besides the first aid kit allowed by the production team, he also prepared special anti-inflammatory medicine, strong painkillers, and ointments. These items could prevent small injuries from becoming major ones at critical moments.

And the most important item: a large-caliber bear-hunting handgun. If carried normally, it definitely couldn't pass the production team's inspection, so Lin Yu'an put everything in his [Personal Space].

Although he made these preparations, Lin Yu'an planned not to use the food in his space unless it was a matter of life and death.

While using the space as a safety net, he wanted to challenge his true wilderness survival abilities and limits.

Time flew by quickly amid busy preparations and tender moments with Aliya.

The moment of parting inevitably arrived.

That night, Aliya was somewhat wild, being particularly active on Lin Yu'an's waist. Her snow-white skin showed hints of rosy flush, her eyes were somewhat dreamy, and her face showed the flush of post-exercise.

Half an hour later, the two lay embracing on the sofa. Aliya gently rested her head on his shoulder, feeling his familiar warm breath.

Aliya's voice carried deep reluctance. "Darling, you must take good care of yourself and don't get hurt! The babies and I will wait for you at home and pray for you every day."

Lin Yu'an gripped her hand tightly. "Don't worry, darling. I'll protect myself just like I protect you."

She lifted her head and looked at Lin Yu'an with tearful eyes. "Lin, promise me you'll definitely come back safely. Win or lose, you're the greatest hero in my and the children's hearts."

"I promise you!" Lin Yu'an lowered his head and deeply kissed Aliya's lips.
