HUN Chapter 6: The Interview

In the temporary study of his apartment, Lin Yu'an was making preparations before the interview. After taking a deep breath, he straightened his simple white T-shirt, ensuring his appearance looked clean and neat.

On the laptop screen in front of him, the video conferencing software's countdown was ticking away second by second.

There were only three minutes left until the online interview with the production team of "Alone" Season 8.

When the time came, the video call request popped up right on schedule.

Lin Yu'an clicked to accept, and three faces of different ethnicities appeared on the screen, with a background that looked like a professional studio or program production office.

In the middle was a white male who appeared to be in his forties, carrying the meticulous demeanor of a producer. From his previous research, he knew this was Mark Johnson, the executive producer.

"Mr. Lin Yu'an, hello, I'm Mark Johnson, executive producer of 'Alone'," Mark spoke first, his voice steady and authoritative.

"These two are Dave Canterbury, an experienced survival expert, and Michelle King, head of marketing and public relations."

"Thank you for taking the time to participate in this interview."

"Mr. Johnson, Mr. Canterbury, Ms. King, hello. I'm very honored to have this opportunity," Lin Yu'an responded in fluent English, his tone neither humble nor arrogant.

The interview's opening was quite routine. Mark first briefly introduced the nature of the show and basic requirements for contestants, then got straight to the point.

Mark Johnson's gaze fell on Lin Yu'an with a hint of inquiry. "Mr. Lin, we saw in your application materials that you're currently an international student at Texas Tech University, from China?"

"To be honest, Chinese contestants have been very rare among past participants. Most contestants are professionals with extensive outdoor experience. What advantages do you think you have as an engineering student that would qualify you for such a harsh challenge?"

Lin Yu'an was well prepared and answered calmly.

"Mr. Johnson, first, I have very strong learning and adaptation abilities. Engineering has cultivated my rigorous logical thinking and problem-solving skills, which I believe are equally important in wilderness survival."

"Second, I'm not completely without outdoor experience. In China, I've lived in wilderness environments since childhood and have considerable insight into survival knowledge."

"Oh? Could you be more specific?"

Dave Canterbury, the survival expert, suddenly interjected. His voice was slightly hoarse, carrying the roughness forged by years outdoors.

Lin Yu'an nodded and began to methodically introduce the content he had demonstrated in his skills showcase video, such as how to quickly build shelter with limited tools, how to identify directions, how to start fires using the simplest methods.

He also discussed identifying common edible plants. His descriptions were clear and organized, occasionally interspersed with explanations of small techniques, showing that his knowledge of these skills wasn't merely theoretical.

Dave Canterbury nodded slightly while listening, but the scrutiny in his eyes didn't diminish.

At this point, Michelle King, the marketing representative who had remained silent, suddenly asked a question that was more direct and sharp.

"Mr. Lin, in your application materials, we also saw that you included a news link about the recent Austin supermarket shooting incident."

"In that report, you were called a supermarket hero because you protected everyone in a critical moment. This was indeed a heroic deed and brought you considerable public attention."

Then, looking directly at Lin Yu'an, she continued, "I want to know, how do you think this experience helps you participate in the 'Alone' program?"

"Or rather, are you hoping to use the program to further... well, maintain or enhance this kind of public image?"

This question was quite a trap. If answered carelessly, it could easily be seen as wanting to use the show for publicity.

Lin Yu'an's expression didn't change at all. He met Michelle King's gaze frankly and spoke with sincere tone.

"Ms. King, that experience was a nightmare for me, and also an unforgettable lesson! It made me understand even more clearly the fragility of life and the importance of protecting family."

"If you ask how it helps me participate in the program? It's that it gave me a survival desire far beyond ordinary people and the determination to protect those I love!"

"As for public image?"

He shook his head slightly. "Frankly speaking, I don't aspire to become a public figure. I'm participating in 'Alone' for only one direct purpose."

"That's for the one million dollar prize! For my wife!"

"As a man about to become a father, I hope to create a more stable, worry-free living environment for my family through my own efforts. This is my only motivation for competing, and also the only reason I can persevere."

"At the same time, I also believe in my abilities to persist until the end while ensuring my own safety! At home, the person I love most is waiting for me, and there's also a future I must fight for!"

Mark and Dave exchanged a glance, both seeming somewhat moved by Lin Yu'an's answer.

His words were heartfelt and sincere, showing both a man's responsibility and his desire for success.

The executive producer Mark, who had been silent, finally spoke again, his tone much gentler than before.

"Mr. Lin, your story is very touching, and frankly speaking, your identity as a Chinese international student, along with your previous experience as a 'supermarket hero,' indeed has high market potential and topical value for our program."

"Especially in the Chinese market, we've always hoped to have more representative Chinese contestants appear. Your participation would undoubtedly greatly increase our program's appeal and copyright value on Chinese video platforms."

He paused, seemingly thinking, or perhaps making a final assessment.

Mark continued, "Of course, 'Alone' ultimately chooses those who truly possess strong survival abilities and resilient will. We've already seen your skills demonstration video, and it does have some highlights, but compared to other experienced candidates, you might need more proof."

"However, we're willing to give you a chance to prove everything you've said. Mr. Lin Yu'an, we formally invite you to participate in the final boot camp for 'Alone' Season 8."

"The boot camp will be held in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado in one week, lasting for one week. There you will face more severe tests and more professional evaluations. In the end, only the 10 contestants who pass the boot camp assessment will qualify to truly embark on the wilderness journey of Season 8."

"Of course, the boot camp expenses will be covered by the production team. Do you accept this invitation?"

Lin Yu'an answered almost without hesitation, "I accept! Thank you for giving me this opportunity! I will definitely not disappoint you!"

"Very good."

Mark Johnson nodded. "Specific boot camp arrangements and precautions will be sent to you via email later. We look forward to seeing you in Colorado, Mr. Lin. Please also convey my condolences to your wife and hope she's doing well."

"I will, thank you, Mr. Johnson," Lin Yu'an thanked him sincerely.
