AIR Chapter 186

Chapter 186

Mo Whe drank his tea in silent thought.

He was back home now, and he was lost in thought.

He contemplated the fight, and more than that, he contemplated the outcome. The results had surprised him. He had seen fights before and he had seen mismatched battles start and finish.

He had seen immortals strike mortals down for daring to raise their head in their presence and he had even witnessed a mortal strike an immortal in rage.

That had obviously led to an unfortunate outcome.

But the point was that he had experienced all forms of unmatched combat and this wasn’t something particularly amazing for him. But there was one thing that stood out, and that was that he saw a first step immortal defeat a seventh and eight step immortal, not once, not twice, but three times within one day.

Back within his sect, these people would have been considered talents worthy of being inner sect disciples, if not core disciples. Even the man called Gai Jin, talentless as he was compared to the other two was still worthy of being an inner disciple at the very least.

And yet none of them were. All three had been born from this region and as far as Mo Whe could tell, they had been born under the tutelage of this strange master.

An immortal of the sixth realm.

It had shocked Mo Whe, more so than the fights, the implication was that there was a man who could polish anyone into the immortal rank. A teacher so capable of understanding the nature of cultivation, that they could bring their fellow cultivators to a similar rank by mere suggestion.

There was no such teacher, Mo Whe thought.

That was a fantasy, a stupid ideal. If a cultivator was able to raise up immortals of this caliber then that meant that the cultivator was both powerful and carried the dao of teaching. This man next to him was at least of the seventh rank, if not the eighth, and that changed things in Mo Whe’s eyes.

On one hand, an immortal of that rank was not rare, but they were considered important, people to be watched and tracked. If not only for their use of resources but also for their loyalties and actions.

This land was far from the empire and Mo Whe knew there was nothing of significance here. He could report the man and have a force from the main sect come down to inspect or he could take his offer, feign ignorance and let him go.

The truth was, Mo Whe couldn’t believe that he was even considering this option.

But he thought about the man and his pupil, about how he had faced off against the bandits, and he couldn’t help feeling guilty at the prospect of ruining that.

All of Mo Whe’s life he had followed the rules merely because he couldn’t dare to defy them. And now came a chance to do so, with little risk to him.

Was there something wrong with an immortal hiding out here in the boonies? Was there something wrong with seeking reprieve?

It was stupid to trust a man so quickly, but Mo Whe had seen his pupils, he had seen Yai Mien finish her tribulation and he had watched her hatred for injustice in her fight against the bandits.

He had seen Gai Jin’s refinement and seen him stand strong against Bear.

He had seen Rin Wi refuse to use those kitchen knives to take a life.

And he had seen-- No, he had not seen how Tai Jey had been defeated. A single strike was too quick, too nonsensical to be the cause. The only explanation was that this Bill fellow was beyond the immortal realm.

And this was clearly his way of letting Mo Whe know.

It might have been read as a threat if not for the food afterwards. He might not have believed their action, if he hadn’t witnessed the funeral being held by the monk for the four men on his way out of the valley.

He sent some spies there and they had already sent back some information on the immortal’s conduct. And from what Mo Whe could gather, he truly was just a man out here in search of peace.

He sighed and threw the papers into nothingness. The reports seemed to burn with an invisible flame. The void ate up the words and concepts, the very meaning of those statements.

It even ate at the memories of these reports made by the ones who had written them.

Mo Whe sat in silence.

He pretended to think more about the situation, but he already knew his decision. One would make more work and the other wouldn’t make any work at all.

For now, he would keep an eye on the region and watch out for any strange qi fluctuations. He would only call the empire if this strange immortal did something to attract their attention first.

That seemed fair.

He took out a box full of cookies and ate one.

It was a gift from that Rin Wi girl. Apparently she was an immortal chef, and a talented one at that.

“I wonder if she takes jobs and commissions?”
