From the distance came four men.
Qi had a taste to it, a flavor. It was like food in that way. It tasted like a recipe, like something that was prepared with intent.
Rin Wi tasted the evil of their qi. She frowned at it.
It was a mixture of death, bloodlust, truth, and pride. The last one she recognized.
She looked towards Mister Bill who just shook his head in disappointment.
“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink,” he whispered. “Rin, which one will you take?”
Rin Wi’s eyes scanned the four men, who in turn were scanning them back.
“That one,” she pointed. Her choice of opponent was a clean shaven man wearing silver grey robes. He had sharp eyes and an even sharper blade. His was the law of blade. His was the law of death.
“Who are you?” Rin Wi asked.
“Wolf,” the man replied, seeming to understand her meaning.
“Rin Wi,” She said back.
“Gai Jin?”
“I will fight that burly fellow over there,” Gai Jin pointed.
“I am Bear!” The blood covered man shouted with a yellow smile.
Gai Jin stared at him, seeing his person and his being and Rin could only imagine the disgust he felt.
“Then I suppose I will be fighting you?” A man said to Mister Bill.
“Nope, you’ll be fighting her,” Bill said, pointing his thumb at Yai Mien.
“Oh? Someone at the first step of the immortal realm? I am at the eighth step. You would send a child to their death?”
“They always love their proverbs,” Mister Bill whispered.
“Look,” Bill yelled. “If you three can defeat these three, then all you’ll have to fight is Mo Whe and I at worst.”
“But--” Mo Whe barely got a word out.
“There are five of us and only three of you. If you run, we’ll follow and Mo and I happened to have a good amount of tracking techniques. We knew where you’d be coming and we stood prepared for you.”
“What if you attack whilst we’re fighting?” The last man asked.
“Don’t worry owl, the only man I’m going to attack is your newest brother right there. He and I have a bit of history. And besides, even if we do intervene midway, whatever time you have to fight one on one against these first steps would be considered an advantage, no? I’ve already said you won’t be able to leave. Your best chance of winning is doing what I say. No?”
“How do you know my name?”
“Lucky guess,” Mister Bill shrugged.
Rin Wi moved, as did Gai Jin and Yai Mien. Each of them went for they’re chosen opponents, and each opponent prepared for the oncoming fight.
Rin Wi’s blades clashed against the man who called himself Wolf. Her cleaver and large knife pinched down on his blade as he struck with the full weight of his force. It was full of cutting death.
The man walked the path of the sword and his body treated his balde as if it were a part of him. His qi flowed into the sword, meridians opened within the blade and the sword had lesser dantiants formed with it.
It was like Rin Wi’s blades. They had been remade and reforged in her tribulation and now held a bit of her immortal qi. There was a part of her within those blades and they clashed with another.
There were words said in the other battles, not that Rin Wi had time to listen to them. But there were no words here, only blades.
Her opponent moved with such certainty and speed that she had to focus all her mind to keep up. Of course, she was at the first step and he was at the eighth.
But she was from a Imperium Rank realm. Even as a servant, her bloodline had been bred to perfection. Her status meant that one of the Divine Beast Emporium’s members or their customers might have chosen her as a consort.
It was a disgusting truth, but one that gave her a lot of power. Yai Mien was the same, but she was unsure about that Gai Jin fellow. Mister Bill had been teaching him something, but who knew how that would go.
Rin Wi focused, bringing the whole of her mind into the fight.
A few thrust, several cuts, and a tenth of a second passed between them.
His law was death and his dao was sword.
Death was an interesting law, but a common one. It was normally a dao, an idea by which to guide one’s life. But using it as a law allowed you to treat it as a tool.
Those who praised death were often consumed by it.
Rin Wi blocked his attacks with her cleaver.
Then she backed away. Rin raised her knives for a second and frowned. Then she put them back on her hips and raised her hands.
Wolf squinted his eyes, and then, he struck.
He probably saw this as a moment of ego on Rin’s part and capitalized on it with his eager strike.
But alas, it was not.
Rin moved as the man’s blade pierced into her right arm, her left one grabbed at its hilt.
Wolf tried to blink back but she was too quick, she grabbed the sword hilt and kicked at the man’s chest.
He went flying backwards for almost a mile and as he did so, he reached into his storage space and pulled out another sword of similar quality.
The quality of the blades was the same and the meridians and lesser dantiants that were in this blade vanished and transferred to the other one.
Rin pulled out the sword and watched as the cut tried to close itself. It would take some time for her to heal, but that was fine. She had what she wanted now.
She held the blade and swung.
Yes, a sword was for killing, but the knives were for the food.
In a blink she was in front of him, utilizing her movement techniques to the fullest.
The man called Wolf fought back hard and strong, but Rin Wi was focused, and more importantly, she was actually trying to kill him this time.
Wolf slowed down as the cuts grew numerous and the blade he once held started piercing through his body.
Rin Wi moved with the precision of a butcher, and removed his head with a final cut.
Wolf’s body sailed down from the air, trailing perfectly with its head as if even in death he was trying to piece himself together.
At the final moment, he was still holding his sword. It was covered in his own blood and stood upright, grasped by his still warm hands.
Rin Wi’s cut had been filled with intent and that intent had been to kill and though he tried to fight death, both the law and the tool he used claimed him in the end.
Rin Wi was the first to finish her fight.
