MEMORIES: Anime Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Comments

Thank you for the comment! This was SUCH a great commission! And yes, doing it all the way through and being able to compare them afterwards was a great choice in the end. Ooh, the Female Vocal version of “Rain” is probably my favorite track from Cowboy Bebop! Heinz had SO Pluto Vibes! Yes! And LUNGE’S VA?! NO WAY! That is so awesome - what a range of Voice Work! The “Different gaze” but still Gunbuster is a cool way to view our boys being comfy cozy in space! Even in space, though, there’s corporate red tape! And ooohhhh, the idea of Eva’s journey being an extension/AU for Millenium Actress – well, Satoshi Kon DID work on this short! Love that headcanon! AHAHAAH – the wild ride of relatability to Nobuo with needles, to NOT with Nobuo and his negligence, to being baffled by his persistence through ignorance! What a short! This one had such a fun discussion – and yes, this feels so sad when it’s realized that humans repeat history so much…and sometimes in the worst ways. I agree, Magnetic Rose is so beautiful overall! I need to get the Blu-Ray for this one! I really need to get on that living will as well! Sorry that made you queasy, but I feel that. Solitary as Symbolic - where people become “functions” - I definitely love your point of systems isolating people…Stink Bomb really captures that! Sean really hit it out of the park! Thank you and YES! Friday will be such a fun surprise!!

Oohhh, I love the idea that we might get to see other of these anthologies, especially if they were of quality like this one! Magnetic Rose was soooo good! And yes, The Shining meets HAL! Loved the French Baroque decor….IN SPAAAAACE! And yes, the tech bros are STEM majors jealous they weren’t in the Humanities. ;) And agree - I cannot sing or do instruments, but I can appreciate them and who is able to utilize those skills. Heinz losing his daughter was so traumatizing – Space being full of broken people, come on space cowboys! ;) CORKUS – should I be sad I always forget his name? Bless him. Ahhh, interesting tie in with Magnetic Rose and the Madame with Madame Butterfly. I totally see the connection to Eva in this. I honestly have a core memory of mouthwash and evergreen scents with my grandparents, so yes – I also love the smell of morning glories after a storm! 😀 ANd yes, Nobuo being the MOST negligent! Hahaha but thank you for the links – now that I think about this, this so feels like The Twilight Zone meets Monty Python - such absurdness! CANNON. FODDER. Oof, the drippings of fascism indeed. And YESSSS, The Wall animation, I can see the comparisons, too! But yes, all the symbolism you talk about – definitely fuels the fight, right? You’re preaching to the choir! I honestly LOVED this anthology so much – it was so great and I’m so happy it was commissioned - worth all the time taken! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Ooohhhh, really?! Okay, that makes so much sense! The score for Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorites! Thank you for that info and the comment!

Loved the reaction and discussion! So glad you’ve had a chance to check out this absolute classic! 🥰 And thank you for doing the first watch all the way through initially, I (personally) feel that that is the way it is intended thematically. Magnetic Rose: Yess, can completely see the Cowboy Bebop comparisons in the OST, most especially Jupiter Jazz (my absolutely favourite). Heinz really gave me Gesicht (Pluto) vibes. And his VA was Tsutomu Isobe so our darling Lunge! 🥰 There was something so cute about them floating around in their spaceship in just tank-tops and undies, was just animated in such a "domestic" way. Different gaze but still a bit Gunbuster, perhaps. 😆 I have always found it really funny that they are so far in the future that there are utility workers in space – but they have to float their physical ID so carefully in the vacuum in order to proceed with the mission. 😆 And I also liked the way this is a slightly different AU take on Millenium Actress. Stink Bomb: Loved your journey with Nobuo: “I am this man!” a few minutes later “I am NOT this man!” a few minutes later “You idiot!” 😂 Cannon Fodder: Love that this one inspired such a great discussion! Honestly, watching this one in 2026 with everything going on is extra painful. Decades and centuries fly by, and we collectively as humanity have apparently learned next to nothing. Overall, I definitely consider Magnetic Rose my favourite out of these three – from the characters, to the very particular type of space body/mind-horror, to the environments. All really amazing for me. Also, the ENG dub is really excellent! It was produced with a new Blu-ray release in 2021. I definitely recommend. 🥰 I have to say that that anecdote about the “gift” made me feel a little sick, I’ve heard of similar things lately, unfortunately. And honestly? I am actively considering trying to put something about this in my living will. Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Quite on the nose, I’d say, but on this rewatch I wanted to identify something that’s clearly shared among all three works: that resistance is often solitary and often only symbolic, especially when it is inside environments which force "people" to become "functions." So much from these shorts, I feel, is about the different ways people become isolated within larger systems, and those systems manufacturing conditions where mistakes become inevitable, and then they attempt to just normalise the massive damage for which they are entirely responsible. In the middle of Stink Bomb you said: “Y’all caused this!” and that really could have been the tagline. Thank you to Sean for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Sunspots

You said the first movie has Cowboy Bebop vibes and that's appropriate because the composer is the same Legendary KANNO Youko wrote the music

Memories what a classic! Yeah, this and 80’s animation is what is engrained in me. When this quality of animation was just another Tuesday. This is part of a bunch of anthology movies that many directors were involved in. The director I always remember is Katsuhiro Otomo. I guess he stands out to me because his style is very different from some others. If we saw this one, I’m hoping we will see more from this genre of these anthologies. Some others that usually get a lot of attention are: Robot Carnival, Neo Tokyo, and of course Memories. These are the ones that most people see. There are others, but these are the classics. I hope they get commissions soon! Magnetic Rose: It kind of gives me 2001 vibes. And yes, the Shining as well! HAL, is that you? Not to mention the antique French baroque decor. On the subject of tech bros, to me, they feel like they want to be artsy and creative yet they do not have an artistic bone in their entire body. It’s like they do not know what makes art and so they try to make it with no talent. I mean, we all can’t be artistic! Do I wish I could sing and play an instrument? Hell yes! Am I talented enough to do so? No. Heinz’s memory of his daughter falling was brutal! I agree with you about him escaping to space after she died. Space could be full of broken people, I would think. Miguel reminded you of Corkus due to his girl obsession. So the opera Madam Butterfly is about a Japanese girl who becomes the mistress of an American navy man. He abandons her to get married to a proper wife. He leaves his mistress in Japan pregnant and alone. She pines for his return but he does not return, yet she remains loyal. As you can see, it’s a bit problematic but the opera has that iconic aria. https://youtu.be/bkUq98oiyRc?si=tdeYDcNx5whi0OSY I can’t help think that is also tied to an ex opera singer who was betrayed by a lover and is alone, dying in space. Stink Bomb: Memory can be tied to smell as well! Just think of the smell of baking bread, or cigars or old books, or a long lost loved one. My favorite smell is wet grass on a warm spring day after a thunderstorm. I know you can remember that smell! Oh, Nobuo makes me so angry! There is many layers of negligence going on. His situational awareness is terrible! 😅 I was yelling with you! This section kind of reminded me of a Monty Python skit, the Deadliest Joke! https://youtu.be/YeMnPyusuBE?si=kEaZQh-ZvdlXKu-Z Canon Fodder: This so looks like Otomo! Yeah…. This is world too familiar. It drips with fascism. It also reminded me of Pink Floyd’s the Wall. https://youtu.be/JGVFoBRh3LQ?si=ivDBfOBYHvdaxDSk The brutality of the canons, the propaganda and being a cog in the machine is a future I hope we all fight against. I do not want to remember a world that used to be free and is now not. Government = Colonial Nazis and PDFs right now…. Great analysis of a classic anthology! Thank you for commenting so much time to this movie.
