*SEA-WORTHY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

A nautical summer tale of a young girl that stumbles into some characters who will help her realize things about herself and just how much of the world we truly don't understand...and possibly may never! This was a surreal journey that was a visual FEAST and such spectacle!

Thank you, Shimoyama, for commissioning this film! It was truly a sight to see and experience!

Children of the Sea (2019): FULL LENGTH Movie Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Hahaha, glad the Dr. Pepper joined this one! I agree 100% with you - a fantastic movie with some setbacks! But yes, visually STUNNING 100% agree! I really loved marine life and studying as a kid - I think because I’m in a landlocked place with no ocean near, the unknown of it all was so fascinating to me! So this film was nostalgic in that sense to me! I loooved the Ruka and Umi running around bits, too! Slice of Life goodness is always so fun! YES, thank you – the entire “kissing” and “birthing” business was…uncomfortable to watch. I think it could have been unnecessary too with other ways to get that point across. And YES, “I can’t really tell if they did the work” is such a feeling! I agree with your paragraph on this so much! Thank you for the comment and the kind words - the visuals were to me worth seeing alone! So I’m glad it was commissioned; Shimoyama did so well! And yes, thank you so much!! The Millennium Actress film is FANTASTIC! Highly recommend!

*slurps Dr Pepper* I have thoughts haha. WOW- this was a fantastic movie! Now granted… it does have some setbacks but overall I very much enjoyed the film. I’m not sure where to even begin but this was visually stunning throughout and I was enthralled. I thought the movie was gonna take a… similar direction to free Willy if I’m being honest and it sorta does in the beginning. You have Ruka who’s a bit out of an outcast in her school and.. you could say her “home” life as well. Then you have her around the aquarium her dad works in. Okay I’m getting off track there but I very much much appreciated how beautiful it was to see. So the film sets out with a magical exploration of the ocean’s depths and life in general. It more or less centers with our adorable trio Ruka, Umi, and Sora. It’s been a while since I’ve watched marine life both irl or media so this was awesome! So I’m learning through the discussion and comments that what I thought were Manatees… are actually Dugongs? Cool im learning everyday and today it’s about a different sea mammal from another part of the world. 😊 Aside from the kids I did find other characters interesting but there just wasn't much time. The whole investigation and theories surrounds Umi and Sora with their anatomy and a mystery event- or rather correlation to a meteroite.. still not very clear by the end but it's fine considering there's a 5 volume manga out there. I think my favorite part of the film was Ruka and Umi running around town and just having a good time. It was nice to see her being relied on. Them eating some ice cream was all the more special because how often do those two had some? 😭 With that being said idk- when Sora kissed her and made her gulp a meteorite... and the "guest" involving her helping give.. birth? It was quite uncomfortable and... unnecessary(?) idk it was odd and perhaps it would have been alright had the whale had eaten the piece of meteorite... maybe? Then the ending with parents.... Hopefully they make amends and overtime years later have another kid. But I can't really tell if they done the work so it leaves me in doubt and worried for Ruka. A little too many loose ends with the film but again I have hopes the manga is better. But yeah, I loved the discussion and especially the reaction. 🤣 I didn't laugh much watching the film but i definitely felt seen at the beginning of the movie with the comments made about Ruka & her sports team. The WAY how some things would have been handled differently in America omg. 😆 and it's not that we condone violence but the social aspect looks different in this scenario. I was a little mad when Ruka was to blame on all ends. Reminded me of poor sportsmanship growing up where the one in the wrong gets off Scott free. But I digress 😆 This was still very much worth to see. Thank you Shimoyama for another wonderful commission.❤️ Now that it's over I'm gonna ahead and check out the soundtrack! Have a nice one yall. I thought I was caught up but I missed millennial actress?? Probably butchered the title but I'm excited. Have a nice one everyone.

The art style in this is gorgeous! “Pushing the envelope” is a great way to describe it! A KEENE painting! YES! I totally agree with you and that’s awesome that you have the manga! I am right with you - about how some of the story I totally agree with - it’s just the way it’s presented. I appreciated the message - just the the way it was delivered made me want to roll my eyes at times, too. But yes, the basic simplicity is part of the beauty of the world around us. And thank you about the rant - I hope the manga does it better as well, too! That is good to know that Dugongs are different than manatees, so thank you for that information! I appreciate it! I’m really sad that they’re in danger in Florida and YES, the problem is…*sigh* With us, isn’t it? And it’s great to learn that the False Killer Whales are a legit thing! Thank you for the toothed whale information, too! The creatures at the bottom of the sea are so terrifying! I appreciate all the links you gave; watching for the weekend!! 😀 I agree the animation is GORGEOUS! I agree about the idea of the adaptation being stunning, even if the material delivered gets a little full of itself sometimes. Thank you so much for the comment and kind words - and seeing Angel’s Egg in theaters is so awesome!! Angel’s Egg is such a fun experience and so left open to interpretation - I agree with you and your husband, haha!! 😀

Ahhhhhhhh, yes, that makes 100% sense now! I totally get what you mean - I loved the visuals of this movie so much! That makes sense with the plot being more "complete" in the manga - I am glad they adapted it to this movie because the visuals are so gorgeous! And that helps to know the translation for Kaiju like that! Thank you so much for the commission and the comment with all that info too! It was truly a feast for the eyes!

I love the art style of Daisuke Igarashi. Manga and anime eyes tend to be big, but he pushes that envelope. Very much reminds me of a Keene painting. I think that’s why I like it so much. I do have this manga, but haven’t read it. My tbr pile is huge! I have read another of his manga, “Witches”. The art in that was fantastic as well. He definitely has a style. I totally get what you are saying about the artsiness of this film. The empty wordiness of the “philosophy “ comes off as a bit pretentious. A few times I was rolling my eyes. It got a bit woo woo. Now, some of the things they say are correct. I have said these things before. We are part of the universe, literally. Every element that makes us up has come from the death of a star. We are part of this universe because we are the products of it. There is something awesome and profound about that fact, it is also a very basic fact. That is just how things are. We do not exist in a vacuum. We came from the environmental pressures of this world, the universe and the organisms before us. Your rant at 2:17:55 is perfect! Yes, I got those vibes as well. I hope the manga is different, done better? Im curious now. So, Dugongs are different from a Manatee. They are in the same family, Sirenia. Manatees have a paddle like tail and the dugongs is fluked. Dugongs are also from Asia. Manatees are from the Americas. They are also located in west Africa. Among the Sirenia is the extinct Stellars Sea Cow. I absolutely love manatees and unfortunately in Florida there is a war being waged against them by home owners who want to keep the water ways clear of the sea grass they feed on……. Do you see the problem! https://youtu.be/CFiNeXZceFs?si=BqqfZuCUkW-2Gche Ok, the sea life depicted in this film, I could probably name them all! A False Killer Whale is a toothed whale! https://youtu.be/rHpVgAUZoKk?si=v2ghbTpVAy7bGzyF The deep sea fish washing on the shore, sometimes they just wash up! Now, deep sea organisms do migrate from the depths to more shallow waters every day. They follow the food of course! There is also a very cool video documentary on bioluminescence in deep sea organisms and what its purpose could be. https://youtu.be/jJdLiKYKWzY?si=z6P24MfXaTN2L24i ( I just picked one, there are lots of videos about this) The shark that was pictured with the spiral teeth is an extinct shark like organisms called Helicoprion. Since fossil sharks and their relatives are rare because they are cartilaginous, usually they only find the teeth. So these spiral teeth where usually found by themselves and so biologist has to imagine how these teeth fin in its jaws and let’s say, they were creative. https://youtu.be/ZvojOK5eaZw?si=AATMQsa8AWXl9gUr So baleen whales usually feed by blowing a bubble net that traps fish inside it. Then they come up from the bottom of the net to filter out its food. https://youtu.be/Y-DCP3zPhTc?si=n6JCzBpsd6EwlMKO I loved the animation in this film! I think the more woo woo part gave a good platform for some crazy visuals that were worth the watch! Beautiful film, beautiful music, and I too like the idea of mer people. I fell in love with the idea of mer peoples in the story “ the Voyage of the Dawn Treader”. Glad I finally got to see your reaction to this. It gave me an excuse to finally watch the movie! Btw, we saw Angels Egg in the theater, it was fantastic! Husband had never seen it. He said he didn’t know anything about it. I told him, after the movie he still might not either! When the film ended he turned to me and was like, you were right! Hahahaha!

Now you understand why I say don't think too much, just feel it The original manga has 5 volumes, but anime producers decided anime movie adaptation I think that decision is good It's worthy for a movie But it's so packed and people say the movie is visually great, but for the story line wise, manga is better Also, the author, IGARASHI Daisuke, won the multiple awards with this manga 怪獣 is a monster like Godzilla, but 海獣 is just a marine mammal Both pronounce Kaiju The title is 海獣の子供, Children of marine mammals

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was on my long-list to watch. I had put this off as I was aware of a particular small narrative thread I thought might be a bit difficult for me, but it was wonderful to follow along with the support of the reaction. Really glad I finally got to watch it. 🥰 I could spend ages watching their interpretations of marine life in this art style – just so wondrous. 🥰 Visually the film is so beautiful and unique in many ways, but I specifically adored getting to see all the varied animal and plant life! And I’m always a big fan of the use of vivid colours! Also the soundtrack was stunning, especially the piano sections! You touch on many topics in discussion where I feel similarly. I think an element of ‘how much do I trust the author’ definitely comes in for me. In the final moments, I had a tough time. The idea of the family situation that they already have: with Ruka seemingly neglected to an extent, an alcoholic mother, a father who doesn’t seem that interested in proactively helping his child… So then they decide to just have another?! Ugh. Now themes of resistance? Always, it seems. 😆 Most interesting to me was the theme of resistance against humanity’s detachment from nature. There was a disconnect which seemed present among even a lot of the people who have made some part of ‘nature’ their life and profession. There was this perfunctory presentation of how a lot of the staff were going about their work, or “researching” Umi and Sora, etc. So on the other side, we got resistance against losing that sense of wonder and specifically gaining awareness. And I think we see this later in the different ways that Anglade, Dede and then Jim act (along with the kids). Especially when Jim makes the final choice to delete the data and abandon the 'spoils' of the work maybe? I thought it was his boat we saw in close up, due to the red flowers he was often shown surrounded by among the money, but I'm not sure. Also, whatever that lobster dish they were having – I need to try it! Looked so delicious and made the one lobster really last. Thank you to Shimoyama for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
