Takopi's Original Sin: Episode 6 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*FINALE OF TEARS HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

We reach the finale of this series and what a short, but impactful journey this had been. This series may not "write the book" on generational trauma and the cycle of abuse, but it certainly adds an important chapter that is worthy of any viewer to see and empathize with these characters in this incredibly animated series.

Let's get into the ending of this short but (bitter)sweet series!

Takopi's Original Sin: Episode 6 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

Thank you for the comment! Yeah, I honestly have felt really torn about this series. Yeah, to be honest, the reception to my reactions probably will have me not revisiting this one. I wish it weren’t the case, but there’s just been too much toxicity (particularly on YT) for me. I definitely appreciate the focus on the kids in this - the three we had were great to watch. I definitely think that there is “trauma for everyone” *rainbow hands* but to me, it can be a bit much without having time to expand on the characters. Just my opinion, as I’m a character-driven reactor that wants well-developed characters - not to say that’s NOT the case in this because especially Marina and Azuma have a lot of fleshing out. Just…I would have liked it to have been longer with the trauma spread out rather than dumped on the viewer. But I can understand why someone would be okay with this, so no shade to them. But that’s one of the reasons (my own personal tastes) that made me not enjoy it as much as the fandom. To your point with Rei - that moment felt so EARNED and that’s why I love that series so much - here, the ending felt very rushed and anticlimactic for me because it (to me of course) didn’t feel earned. And I “get” the ending, but it doesn’t overpower the rushed deus ex machina vibes for me. Again, personal opinion. I don’t think that Shizuka is a femme fetale but also, I felt bad that Azuma couldn’t “be friends” with Shizuka because she stoked a trigger for him. It still leaves a sour taste in my mouth with the message of it. And yeah, I know Shizuka was nice to Azuma to get him to help her - I talked about that in discussions of previous episodes. I do agree that the ending of Azuma finding solace in his brother in Episode 4 was a good ending to his arc. I thought from Episode 5 that the mom was stressed about Azuma in the case but then it could be combined with him losing his job as well. Again, as an English teacher and someone that studies and teaches the structure of stories for a living, all I will say is that a writer can have an unexplained deus ex machina as a climactic story element - which is what happens here - but I’m calling a spade a spade. That’s all. And it’s the choice of the reader to see if they like it as a narrative choice or not, and I’ve said my peace on that. I’ve talked about the interpretations I believe in with this story and it’s been fun to hear other people’s takes as well. I like the connection to the mom in the last episode of course; that was a nice way to tie the theme together. Definitely a bittersweet ending to this show, but I’d be disappointed if it were sunshine and rainbows after all the melodrama we’ve dealt with. Thank you for the comment and support - not going to lie; some of the comments have left me feeling like I’m just defending myself for having a different view of the show and have been disheartening and toxic, so I appreciate folks genuinely being open to a dialogue. Thanks for the comment!

Im glad you watched Takopi's Original Sin. I wouldnt be honest if I didnt say that I wish you enjoyed it as much as some of us did but we all have that one show or book or something that dont quite match up to what we expected and thats fine. I think while other series certainly have dealt with such topics in a more rounded and balanced way and I'll probably revisit those series more often than this one I still think watching this series is a special experience for me this year. I think personally while the adults are very important to the story and people who would disagree needs to watch the show again I think the emotional impact of the story or the journey of these six episodes in general hit alot harder because there is that acknowledgement that the adults are important but the kids are the focus. I think this show made such a wave because as viewers no matter what age or experiences we've had if I had to explain how it felt to me it was as if I was boxed in along with these children and their pain was real and palpable and so Shizuka finally being honest with her emotions in that scene with Takopi felt so cathartic and while I didnt sob it was heartbreaking and I dont blame anyone who did sob. That scene was almost as cathartic as Rei from Sangatsu having a moment of realization that he shouldnt have to live feeling the way he does and he should be more concerned about his own happiness than having everything else weigh him down. Ok on to the episode itself the second half did feel rushed but it's one of those endings that click in your head on a rewatch and certain details make it alot more suitable as an ending. First of all the scene with Azuma and Takopi I dont think i can talk about this scene by itself so I'll talk about the conclusion with Shizuka etc as much as a hot take this is Im glad that Azuma and Shizuka have gone their separate ways. I dont think that way personally because oh a love triangle would ruin everything because that would be kinda stupid but I feel that way because Azuma and Shizuka had an unhealthy relationship throughout the series that I dont feel would have been resolved easily with them interacting while they are in elementary school even with the improved timeline especially with them continuing to experience traumatic events at their age. I dont feel this way because I think Shizuka is manipulative or a femme fatal either. From Azuma's part of the story he was obsessed with Shizuka because he wanted to prove to his mom that he can fix all problems and Shizuka looks like his mom to a certain degree and so that created an unhealthy obsession with impressing her or saving her and that was to fill that void or that need for validation. While I agree that some of the conversation he has with Takopi is him projecting because of the dire situation he is in for eg. Oh I shouldnt have tried to save her etc there are parts of the conversation that ties into Takopi's error that he acknowledges that he jumped into save her without ever asking how does she feel and Azuma as well also did this with Shizuka who yes we could go down a rabbit hole that Shizuka didnt open up either but the point is that Azuma and Shizuka had a relationship of convenience where they both got what they wanted out of it but it wasnt one where they could lean on each other and support each other emotionally. I think its interesting that Azuma brings up Shizuka never doing her homework when from episode 1 we see that Shizuka constantly got bullied so her notebooks were always missing so she relied on Takopi for the answer and before that she would get mocked for "not doing her homework" but Shizuka even when Marina was gone most likely remained inactive in doing what she needed to do. You say that Shizuka was nice to Azuma but Shizuka has only ever been nice to Azuma when she needed him to help her when Azuma came back crying in episode 3 Shizuka just stared at him she didnt ask him what was wrong or have any interest in comforting him and we dont need to talk about episode 4. So I prefer the ending that Azuma had the episode 4 fight with his brother and he has a more balanced lifestyle studying and having fun and not hyperfixating on studies and I think its fine if Azuma's story is that he and Shizuka are classmates or schoolmates both in elementary and high school and his brother and his new friends are his support system. On a side note I do like that the glasses were foreshadowed from episode 3 that Junya promised to get him new ones after he bought the couples ring but Azuma was so fixated on the ring he didnt realize Junya's plans to replace his glasses so it doesnt surprise me that after their fight in both timelines by the next day he got his new glasses it's very wholesome. Its unfortunate that in the doomed timeline Junya's next paycheck ended up being his last paycheck in the job he had. I dont think the mom was stressed out just because Junya lost his job but because Azuma being involved in this case put them in the public eye in a bad way even if the police doesnt believe that Azuma killed Marina. Those ladies at the end of episode 4 already knowing everything and saying how the Azuma boy went to the police already paints its own picture as to what lies ahead for Azuma and Junya and the family reputation as prestigious doctors in the small community. So I'll talk about Takopi sacrificing himself last and the overall message with that before that I want to address the powers part of it so yes is it true that we dont know the full extent of Takopi's powers and so do we have to stretch our imagination that a Happian alien has his own happy powers that he could use to power the camera at a cost? yes but the sacrifice itself did not implant Takopi's experiences of different timelines or memories of himself into our three main characters them remembering the previous timelines is a common time travel trope at play where the characters who have experienced the direct effects of several loops have faint memories of the events that feel like deja vu even though technically since this is a new timeline they havent experienced the events. Your Name can be an example of that. Ok so now to get to the sacrifice and the overall message. First of all what was Takopi's sin? If we base it off a biblical interpretation it would be being disobedient to God the Father and eating the fruit to gain knowledge and wisdom of what is good and evil. So for Takopi this would amount to disobeying his own mother and coming to understand what human nature is like because of the domino effect of his mistake. If we think about it things spiralled because Takopi gave her the gadget but also over and over he tried to fix things without understanding what needed to be fixed. In a sense both gaining interest in human nature but not understanding it then trying to get involved without knowledge led to the wrong solutions. With this in mind there is a comment that I saw from someone that I want to paraphrase who also had their issues with the ending but on rewatching had some interesting thoughts on it So their comment basically said Takopi's sacrifice and the ending might feel corny or cliche but it was necessary for Marina and Shizuka to get their second chances to bond and finally lean on each other . Because of the sin it requires a sacrifice and Takopi takes the consequences of their wrongdoings through his sacrifice. The ending is not all sunshine and roses for these characters because they are still living in the abuse of their parents but because Takopi has made a lasting impression on the lives of Shizuka and Marina it paved the way for them to be there for each other. The entire message of just being there for each other when someone is going through something and listening to each other is truly powerful and simple but hard to grasp in the end. There isnt a direct solution to everything and that's ok. This comment put into words better than I could how I felt about the finale and it's fine if people feel controversial about it I think a series is great if it sparks meaningful discussions and I enjoyed listening to the discussions and interacting about this series.

Thank you so much for the kind words and the comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the reaction and discussions - and I appreciate you sharing your perspective! No, no, I totally understand some people are going to love this series and that is valid! I am glad that I watched this series - while “enjoy” isn’t a term I’d use for it, I really feel it was a watch that many need to see. Now, the adaptation quality is THROUGH THE ROOF for this series - it’s gorgeously animated and couldn’t be better in that regard, to me! The production quality was really amazing! Yeah, sometimes the hype bar gets raised beyond expectations, but that doesn’t mean this wasn’t a quality show and I’m glad I got to see and talk with you all about it! Thank you so much for the comment and support! Onwards!!

Loved the commentaries! Back in episodes 4/5 I didn't share the same criticisms you've had but it's probably because I binge read the whole thing so the potential "issues" didn't have time to leave a lasting impression before seeing the ending and as you pointed out (on the example of no good adults) the conclusion of the story explains a lot about the whole narrative. That being said, the whiplash I got from the ending itself was insane, so I can second most of what you've said for this episode. All in all, I'm very glad you've given the series a shot and that you've liked it (I guess "enjoy" cannot be the word for this one :P). Glad that the series got a fantastic adaptation in the first place cause I wasn't expecting any, let alone one with such great production. Not glad that the hype set the bar too high but oh well, hopefully the future series will surpass the expectations.
