Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*COLLECTED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I went into this movie ENTIRELY blind and it was the best experience so all I will say is BUCKLE IN. This movie's animation? Smooth as silk. The tension and thriller-aspects? Nailed. The twists and turns? Adored. I won't spoil anything else but Sunspots, you chose a DARING movie to start this month of commissions off with - hoooooo buddy!

What a wild ride!! Struggle Squad! I really like that “arc” that we’ve had with these months! YESSSSS - I am with you on the .1% interest in a schizophrenia ending - I liked the other two endings as well. I love the visual insanity of this series – SO MUCH density and sociopolitical commentary - I think I could easily break this down per frame and we’d be here for weeks. It’s so dense and I admire that about it so much! Ahhh, that’s interesting that there’s overlap with the Hungarian and English dub! How cool! Honestly, Ivan Kamaras’s voice is one of the most gorgeous things in this movie! Same with Gabriella Hamori! <3 And yes, the dub is amazing - I definitely got the 50’s noir crime thriller vibes and it was checking off so many boxes for me as it went on! The tie to artwork sold me as someone that loves viewing artwork! That is a fascinating note about artwork and access and the recent incident in Paris I think makes this a topical conversation…esepcially when that art might have been apprehended under less than…”philanthropic” means? Oohh, especially with that tie about the artwork of Picasso being “confiscated.” Ahem. And yeah, Ruben’s resistance in his nightmares and trying to take ownership of his own issues going on. I can so see the Natsume conversations leaking in - Natsume just connects to all, right? 😛 I would have watched an entire series about this crew and their adventures - one movie was not enough! Sadly, I went to AO3 to find fan fiction and there is LITERALLY NONE about this movie and that is a damn crime! Thank you for the comment, kind words, and recommending this amazing movie! It’s been one of my favorites lately! Onwards to next week!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a really wild ride of a reaction and I am so glad to see you had a good time with it! 🥰 Last season we had some ‘Sapphic Summer’ and this was a... Struggle Squad Selection. I hope you enjoyed all these buffoons the past few months! 🤣 To get it out of the way, I am very much in a similar boat with the last few moments of the film. I know what they say it is meant to mean… But frankly I am: 55% interested in a reality where everything happened and maybe Ruben is reminiscing during a nap; 44.9% interested in all the heists being a dream with Ruben’s patients (and Mike) being real but simply “featured” in the dream; and exactly 0.1% interested in the ‘schizophrenia’ ending. My first watch through of this film was very similar to yours, it was just utter visual insanity and I loved it. I found it quite overwhelming at times because there is such a density to the art. e.g. there is a WHOLE load of sociopolitical commentary just casually happening in the background through all the posters in various languages. Such an amazing cast overall! But what I found really fun and, partially, why I chose the English dub for the commission – is that a number of the actors are the same for both the original Hungarian version and the English language dub. The actor for Ruben, Ivan Kamaras is primarily a Hungarian theatre actor but has appeared in a whole range of stuff worldwide. Yes, “read me an audio book and let me look at the fish” 😆 – that would be excellent therapy in itself. And Gabriella Hamori did the same for Mimi! The main reason though was that the humour and flavour with the accents is such a delight – especially the jet-setting couple enjoying all the museums everywhere and the mafiosos/crims straight out of some 50s noir. They outdid themselves with the dub, I feel! Love that you noted the one lone duck as the most normal looking thing in the whole movie. 😆 One of the things I find so wonderful is to think how much fun the creators had (I hope) just reimagining original art and conceptualising everything that appears in the film! 🥰 Even all the background details, if there’s a TV screen or a poster or figures in a window – literally each and every detail was carefully considered and something visually amazing/hilarious/creepy/etc is happening at an astonishing rate. Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Aplenty! Most of all I was interested in the film presenting a kind of resistance to institutionalised access to art. Does Ruben’s quite dire “need” for the art override public access? Is art always part of public heritage or are there exceptions? When art becomes commodified to such a ridiculous degree that a gallery becomes a prison and therefore the art itself is no longer really reachable to a majority of the public – what should we do? I’m certain they deliberately included something like Picasso’s ‘Woman with a Book’ as part of the 13 – it was originally sold to an individual and then “”confiscated”” during WWII. And maybe most prominent being the theme of Ruben’s internal resistance against his nightmares. I think they show such an interesting take on ownership and consumption there – with the need for the art to consume its audience, as well. Excellent discussion around Ruben being so well placed to potentially help himself and being unable to do so. Very real and links so well to all the Natsume conversations we've had! Also, I absolutely adore Mimi and need a whole spin-off of her escapades! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
