Coherence (2014): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*INCOHERENT HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

After coming off of "Love Exposure" the week prior, I was ready to be scared out of my wits, but this movie is more of a mind melting mystery - in the BEST way! This movie was so much fun with how unexpected it was and the way things unraveled between this seemingly tight-knit group of people was so enthralling -- I could not look away by the end of it -- well, except maybe when I was scared!

Thank you, Dana, on Patreon, for commissioning this REALLY exciting movie to get us into the fall festiveness feels!

Coherence (2014): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Comments

Thank you SO much for recommending me and commissioning this movie - I’ve actually recommended it to several fans now, which is more than I can say for some that I watch on the channel because my friends are NOT anime fans. This was such a great film! I’m glad that you share the fear of traditional slasher films and you’re scared easily too! Hahaha, I DO like psychological thrillers - jumps scares and extreme gore that’s out of nowhere gets me sometimes, though. This movie is so entrancing, though! DEFINITELY has a Twilight Zone vibes, as well! The entire premise makes your mind spin and is honestly terrifying, especially seeing how Emily handles the latter part of the movie! The chaos and “spiralling” gave me Uzumaki vibes as well throughout this! And I don’t know if you watch Steins;Gate, but this movie has come up so much in latest discussions of that series, so thank you for the inspiration! The growing distrust and unease throughout this movie was just so wild and like a car crash you couldn’t look away from! And once you know the plot, there is the, when did this start? And how it all spins out of control! And once you realize there are nearly INFINITE number of possibilities by the climax? Just sheer insanity but I was obsessed with it! You could easily go conspiracy-board-sama with trying to track it all! I definitely will have to see what the fandom has done with breaking this down and trying to track it all! I can only imagine how fun they are. OOHHHHHHH - And the idea that they all could be from different timelines at the start?! AHHHH that is INSANE - I hadn’t noticed that with Laurie but it suddenly all makes sense! OHHHH And Em losing contact from Kevin with the phone breaking and the dark tunnel – oh my god *mind is blown* that is WILD! Now I immediately want to rewatch! And yesss, that “We are visitors” line is so eerie and good! I agree, the moment they check all the boxes’ inside contents with each other and they all say different things? That’s where it just goes off the rails for me. That’s a good point about Em not necessarily being “the bad one;” they all are, technically, when pushed to extremes, and I love that theme. And it’s heartbreaking, yes, especially because she’d been the “rational” one the whole movie. I wonder about the ring size as well - if it’s just another way to make her feel even more alien? Maybe the other Em was left-handed? Hm. Or maybe he got the ring originally for someone ELSE and she ended up with it? Curiouser and curiouser…and ooohhh, yeah, the fact that she did what she couldn’t at the end! THE LAYERS OF THIS MOVIE! The production is WILD and maybe my favorite thing about this movie and what makes it great; agree 100%! That is so insane - the 1.) improv skills of these actors and skills to stay “in character,” and 2.) the writing prowess to be able to lead the actors to the points you needed with so few details. That is so cool! And WHAT!? THE DIRECTOR’S WIFE GAVE BIRTH AT THE HOUSE!? With all of them there?! That is craziness! I agree, this movie is so unique - I don’t know if a sequel could capture lightning in a bottle but if they just made a movie with the same “format” and structure of filming? I’d be down! This was like a supernatural murder mystery gone bananas and I loved it! Thank you SO much for the commission! This was so kind and enjoyable! I HAD to use that for the thumbnail the moment I saw that shot and thank you for all the support! Sorry it took so long to get back to your comment, but I wanted to carve out time to read it all and answer you with plenty of time. Thanks so much!!

I love that you've already seen this movie and ooohhh, that's such a good point; I can't wait to rewatch this movie - hopefully with friends I've convinced to watch it with me haha!! And yeah, the actors did a phenomenal job in this! I love that idea of resisting fate - which our main gal does throughout this! But then...can you truly change fate? and yeah, that internal resistance - who is the "dark" version...or is that even a question? And yeah, those questions - I love how this series attempts to question them! September is going to be a FANTASTIC month for commissions; thank you for the kind words and comment!

Rewatching this through the reaction felt like cheating, because without sound I didn't have to feel terrified at all like I was the first time 😂😭 Like you, I CANNOT do traditional slasher type horror, I'm way too easily scared, and yet I'm a masochist and am absolutely obsessed with psychological thrillers with mind-bendy stuff, even though they scare me too and leave me with existential crises..... and this movie fills me with existential dread every time I so much as THINK about it, but I still can't get enough, it's just the kind of media that fascinates me way too much. 😂😭😭😭 Coherence feels so very Twilight Zone, like the infamous The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street..... The people from the other houses are presented as aliens, like dopplegangers usually are, but they're all just as human as our main cast is, which is what makes it so terrifying, because as we know, humans in a sense are the most terrifying creatures there are. Obviously, coming face to face with and interacting with someone who looks just like you but isn't you IS terrifying, and I don't blame them for acting the way they do lol, but they become so caught up in the paranoia of what the others are doing — or more often, what they COULD be doing — and fearing the worst, causing everything to spiral downwards irreparably. With how many realities there are, it's likely there's plenty of versions of the characters out there who would actually want to meet their alternate selves/selves of their friends and be friendly with them, and learn more about them for curiosity's sake, but with just the handful we see in the movie alone, they instead fall down the (much more realistic and human, albeit increasingly irrational and stupid) destructive thought process of "we need to know what they want/are planning" > "we need to make sure they're not a threat" > "we need to kill them before they kill us first because if I'm thinking that then that means the other me is also thinking that too" (Mike plsss chill 😭), and the growing distrust all leads to these many little horrifying self-fulfilling prophecies that causes many of the very things they're worried about/thinking to actually come to pass (seriously, I'm still rather confused about the box creation scene ngl, because at that point some of them there have already made the box and some of them haven't, so it feels like some of them don't realize they're repeating the past so to speak and it feels like a time loop/chicken and egg scenario even though it isn't??? does that make sense??? *brain explodes*)......... because they're all (the versions we see glimpses of in the movie at least) very similar selves to each other, so the distrust they feel at the "start" of the night infects the other millions of houses, until it all collapses into a nightmare (get it, collapses just like the realities col- okay I'll see myself out-). In a perfect scenario where none of the houses ever knew about each other, or an even more perfect scenario where they did know but were all perfectly amicable with one another as mentioned earlier, everything would have been fine. But they're humans, and humans are scary and stupid, and they couldn't just be smart and stay in their own damn houses to prevent disaster 🙃 though again I also don't really blame them; it was pitch black night too, maybe they would have acted a bit more rationally if it had been broad daylight (just a little) 😂😭 The growing dread and tension as the movie goes on and things are slowly being revealed is absolutely unmatched, helped greatly by the close intimate shots and how genuine and realistic everyone's reactions are, as you said. I love so much how at first, you assume there's only one other house we're dealing with, just like they do. Then, you assume it's at least 3 or 4 instead. And then, by the time they're making the second box, and Em discovers the discrepancies between the numbers, and the calculations are done, you realize....... oh no. /oh no/, there's /much/ more than that. much, MUCH more houses and versions of people. SO much more that it's very possible NO ONE from the original group outside of Em is around anymore (which isn't true, but that's how it feels lol), and that they're so fractured it's impossible to tell WHO is from WHERE anymore, or just how often you lost people! ...And so then the urge is so tantalizing to immediately rewatch the movie to be able to track just how many versions of each character there are, and where and when you trade out for new ones 😂😭😭😭 Diagrams galore have been made by fans for this, as well as a whole second by second timeline of the entire movie that notes every possible observation and clue (some of which are likely simply filming continuity errors, which are noted but still mentioned); they're CRAZY and so fun to read. 😭💖 Probably the most obvious yet best and most chilling observation made upon a first rewatch though, is a certain little detail early on during the dinner: Mike mentions Laurie doing yoga, which she is confused by, and he also mentions being a major actor on Roswell, which she's also confused by, being a big fan of the show but not remembering ever seeing him. This blows your mind when it tells you that quite possibly NONE (Mike and Laurie at least, but probably everyone) OF THE CHARACTERS ARE FROM THE SAME TIMELINE FROM THE VERY START!!! After all, they all have to drive through the dark area to get to the house...... and Em loses contact with Kevin when her phone breaks (not that the phone breaking happens to everyone obviously, just saying it's a sign of switching realities because the comet is active when it happens). They spend a good chunk of the movie wanting to stay together, wanting to identify each other, wanting to get "their" *insert name* back, etc, but the truth is that likely none of them actually knew each other from the very beginning, long before the power went out and they ever first suspected anything.....! It's so chilling and so good!!!!! My favorite scene is the aforementioned moment when Em finally understands what's going on and explains it to Mike..... the line "We are not from this house. We are visitors." is SO infinitely eerie; the use of the word "visitors" makes me think of aliens like I said earlier, and that's really the feeling it gives — in that moment, Em has the chilling realization that she and others do not belong in that house, and more chillingly, that /she/ does not belong with /them/. They are alien to her and she is alien to them, and it's even more terrifying to her than the moment earlier with the other Kevin at the car, when she assumed she at least still knew her other housemates (though the Kevin moment outside is probably the most terrifying moment in the movie imo, it's too well acted 😭😭😭). Now, however, she feels truly alone, and doesn't even recognize these people anymore. There's not much left of the movie at that point, but the entire tone suddenly changes, as Em feels an immediate distance from everyone else, like they're, again, aliens to her, not helped by her feeling that Kevin is cheating on her with Laurie, leading her to simply watch as they spiral out of control into insanity and abandon them for good. It's really chilling (I keep using that word but it's the only one I can think of.......)....... and while I wouldn't consider Em "the bad one" just as much as I don't think any of them are truly fully "the good" or "the bad" ones — they're just humans pushed to the extremes of what humans can be and they have the capacity for both good and bad, etc etc you know the theme lol — it definitely is shocking and unnerving to see Em suddenly make the choice she does at the end, when she's been the most rational one the entire movie. The phone call at the very end indicates that the other Em is still alive, so it kinda feels to me like our Em couldn't bring herself to hit her hard enough to kill her, even though realistically that's what she needed to do if she really wanted to ensure she could replace her without anyone ever finding out the truth....... maybe it speaks to her reluctance to harm her own self, and knowing that what she was doing wasn't right. It doesn't work out for her perfectly in the end like she hoped it would, just like life never does..... maybe the fact that she didn't commit to killing alternate Em suggests that she knew deep down she wouldn't get what she wanted anyway even if she had. I don't know, there's a lot to think about from her choice. I definitely understand why she did it, and hell I can't say I wouldn't have done it if I was her, but needless to say she is nottttt gonna have a good time right after the movie ends, ahaha...... 😬💀 (on a random note, I am confused about the ring though..... why couldn't she wear it? Like yeah, I get the symbolism that it doesn't fit her showing that she doesn't fit in that timeline, but realistically her fingers would be the same size, so what's the deal? 🤔) Also I gotta say I somehow didn't put together that Em's story at the beginning of how she failed to become the understudy so she could replace the lead actress is literally just straight-up foreshadowing what she does at the end. My mind is blown and sometimes I am very dumb for the most obvious things 🤯🤦‍♀️ I'm so glad that despite forgetting about my links, you were able to go read about the production of the movie yourself, cause man it is WILD and part of what makes this movie so great imo. 😭 Just letting your cast loose in your house for 5 days with no script and just basic notes about what their character does that night, and telling them to go apeshit??? I'd kill to have been a fly on the wall for those sessions cause HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK??? 😭😭😭 The trivia on imdb mentions at least two times where they were locked in a stalemate or another for 45 minutes and the director had to step in to steer them to keep things rolling 😭 and then the Snickers commercial incident as you mentioned, and also the director's wife was apparently very pregnant and wanted to have birth at home so she told him he only had 5 days to film the movie??? and then she had birth AT THE HOUSE on the SAME NIGHT they filmed Em walking down the street looking for different realities??? Crazy stuff 😭😭😭 The way it all came together is incredible though; you can't even tell it's acting at all, and not having a script paid off IMMENSELY, in a way I never thought possible. I've never seen a movie that feels quite like it, in the best way. The director is supposedly working on a spiritual sequel of sorts with different characters, so I'm eagerly awaiting that whenever it happens ahhhhhhh....... I'm so happy you enjoyed my recommendation Romania!! Seriously, your praise/thanks made me smile 😊 I haven't watched anything of yours in so long, I feel bad, so I'm happy I could commission something you enjoyed! And I might definitely do it again in the future 💖 Thanks so much for watching this underrated masterpiece; I hope it makes more people aware of it 😤 (also the thumbnail is so cool, perfect choice haha)

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a really fun rewatch! The 2nd watch experience is definitely something I now recommend – the anxiety abates, and trying to figure out who is who+when and watching these great actors work is excellent when you know where things are going. Now themes of resistance? 😆 Really interesting in this one. Resistance against this deterministic universe, but the ideas they come up with are all, of course, naturally a part of the fabric of the universe and never unique enough. The most curious to me is this kind of internal resistance against the characters’ own pasts and choices – how difficult would it be to not want to replace yourself if you had the opportunity? How cruel could we be to ourselves if another version seemingly had it better? Thank you to Dana for this commission! 🥰 Looking forward to everything coming up in September! 💙
