As One (2012): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*UNIFIED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This movie really came out of nowhere to floor me with its heart and passion - Sports Anime transitioned into live action? Possible secret yuri? A true story that shatters my soul? Why, YES! All three, please!

Thank you, Sunspots, for commissioning this fantastic movie that any lover of Ping Pong is going to really want to dive into! It's so good and I loved it!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! A SAPPHIC SUMMER SELECTION - the alliteration and theme is just so good! I love how you describe the “tenderness at odds” in this - it’s so good! YES, all the sports anime tropes and I loved it! I was living to return back to ping pong as a sport! I loved how so many “pairs” grew in their relationships throughout this movie - the connections they made in this were so well done! And the matches were engaging - it was great! And the fact that the female players took center stage! Yesss! Loved it! There were so many layers of resistance, I agree; these hit hard, especially towards the end! I appreciate this selection for commission so much, so thank you again for the commission, comment, and kind words! This coming week is going to be a JOURNEY. A long, long, journey!

Excellent recommendations! At least one of those is a likely future commission 🥰

Loved the reaction and discussion! Hope you’ve enjoyed this Sapphic Summer Selection! 🥰 To me this set has been all about tenderness between women who are at odds with various structures: state ideology, heteronormativity, family and societal expectations. And in terms of this one, it really does have all the classic elements: sports anime camp, drama, tears, rain, team shenanigans, politics, ships, a tournament arc, etcetc. 😆 Various things I loved: The growth of the relationship between the coaches (definite ship as well) 🤣 Junghwa’s mum actually going: ‘you didn’t need to call, I get all the updates on TV’ I don’t care about any rational arguments – as far as I’m concerned there was a proposal in the end! 😭 All the little connections forming and how much weeping there was in the end after all the literal physical altercations earlier in the film The guards joining in when all the North players were confined to their rooms The visualisation of the final match up sequence and overall the sound design throughout! Your appreciation of the film’s full focus on the female players with Junghwa and Bonhui at the centre. 🥰 And themes of resistance?! 😆 Of course - this is North and South in its most literal depiction. And we get many layers of personal resistance among the different team members while their states both attempt to instrumentalise them. I especially love all the tiny examples of their resistance against surveillance and policing of their relationships: sharing food, the small gifts, the trip to the zoo, etc. Thank you for another fun ride of a reaction! 🥰 It is so good to revisit ping pong again and I think this and the anime pair very nicely. Looking forward to next week! 💙

Great reaction. If you want to watch more movies about Korea history I'd like to recommend some. The Front Line, Ode to My Father, and Joint Security Area deals with North and South Korean history, while 1987 When the Day Comes, A Taxi Driver, and 12 12 The Day deals with South Korean history during the 80s - 90s. Also, just as a side note. I have to say the subtitles do not do this movie justice.
