Given The Movie: "To the Sea" FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*SEAWORTHY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I've been waiting a LONG time to see these manga chapters adapted into this movie, and to hear "That Song" brought to life - and this was a beautiful finale to the Given Movie Trilogy! There is still one more chapter of the "10th Mix" to react to, but I'm going to wait until this fall when the OVA coming out arrives, so we're not QUITE done with Given, yet, which I'm so happy about!

NOTE: I may have mentioned a PIP Reaction in the discussion, but the file did not save during editing, unfortunately - I apologize, but you can totally sync this reaction with the one on streaming! Enjoy!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

I loved this movie so much! It was great to finally see the manga adapted into anime! The fact that Uenoyama was able to bring Mafuyu a piece of his ex-lover and best friend for him to cherish? LOVE. Uenoyama being all about the song and its message of love to Mafuyu - that’s a great point to bring up and I love that! And him doing back up vocals! Yessss, the fact that Uenoyama is the back up vocals to show Mafuyu that he’s going to be there to back up and love Mafuyu even after all he’s went through. I agree 100% with your thoughts on this! Ugetsu and Mafuyu’s relationship and how they’ve influenced each other is so great! I love how Mafuyua has helped Ugetsu and vice versa! The manga is really good and I would recommend it! The pacing was a little sluggish as it came out chapter by chapter, but it’s definitely a story that reads best volume by volume, in my opinion! I’m so glad you enjoyed the movie and thank you for sharing your thoughts on it!

I loved this movie so much! I’m so excited that you’ve caught up with this series! It’s such a gooooood series, but yes, that first movie can get ROUGH - but I appreciate that Kizu is not afraid to talk about subject matters like that in a very mature way. There’s so much tackled in this series but it’s done with such grace and realism. “Compassion” is such a great way to put it, too! Ugetsu took me a while to like as a character - I think the manga helped, but I like him when he’s not with Akihiko! And that Mafuyu and him are good influences for each other is great. I would so read a spin-off of Ugetsu finding a new life internationally! Yuki and the way his death has affected everyone is so well done in this series and so realistic - from his mom to Hiiragi and to of course Mafuyu. Mafuyu is literally the one character who can make the miscommunication trope “okay” for me, because his character makes sense why he is the way he is. Uenoyama is such a sweet but grumpy bean! “Disaster Gay” fits him so well but YES, he’s trying and he’s a rookie at all this, so what can we do?! I loved listening to him alongside Hiiragi’s band - they sounded amazing! And Mafuyu getting comfy = he becomes a mischievous gremlin is so fun! I love that Mafuyu can carry a “piece” of Yuki with him from now on; it’s so precious and heartwarming in this movie. I love how complex their emotions are in this - it’s so wonderful and I’m glad you got into this series and got to watch this movie! Given was one of the first series I watched on the channel and it holds a special place in my heart! There’s still a little manga left to review so I hope to get to that and the “final OVA” (for now) in the fall! And I’m so excited I share a birthday with Hiiragi! 😀 Thank you for the comment and kind words - and YES! Anime Annie as a literal human cinnamon roll is perfection, no? Thank you for the support and so glad you’re now properly introduced to this series!

This movie was so good! I cried, and I've had this song stucked in my head all day. Uneoyama working so hard and tirelessly to bring this little piece of Yuki back to Mafuyu is... the greenest flag ever. I love that Uneoyama says that he just likes the song so much, despite sort of hating that he does; because that makes so much sense! Yuki wrote the song thinking of his love to Mafuyu, and it's only natural that those feelings would connect with Uneoyama in particular, another person who loves Mafuyu that way. Ugetsu being the one that made Mafuyu actually go to the concert was such a nice little tie-in to the anime, or earlier in their story as it were; as, if my memory is right, he was also a great help to Mafuyu finally being able to write the lyrics for his song on the anime that helped him to express his feelings. Gosh, Uneoyama singing backup in the Umi Eh song made me so emotional. Because, yes, this is a song that Yuki wrote for Mafuyu, and for Mafuyu to have a piece of Yuki with him forever; but it's also very much a testament of Uneoyama's love for Mafuyu, so he gets to sing the song as well. Like Uneoyama singing with Mafuyu the song from the anime this time around, instead of Mafuyu singing it alone; and the way that the parts that he sings along to feel like answers to Mafuyu's pain, it makes me so emotional. If there's something that I really want to do now, is to go back and read the whole manga. Because the way this movie ends makes me feel like it would flow so nicely read in one go, without pauses, to let everything hit you at once and see them come out of the wreckage bit by bit, without pauses in between. It's such a beautiful story, and I really want to experience it fully, with no memory gaps of any kind. So yeah, I really liked this movie and it solidified my love for this series so much. As much as it hurt at times, I came out of it with a warm feeling in my heart, and I think that alone makes it worth it to experience it.

*Whimsically brushes hair over the ear* Given: To the sea gave me everything I wished to see! I’ve been catching up the last 5 or so days trying to watch from the beginning. I would have finished on Monday but delayed because I couldnt believe I was almost caught up! Literally cannot believe I had this series at the bottom of my list. It’s such an incredible show & while the first film was a little tough to get through… I do appreciate the kinds of characterization Given is not afraid to include. Speaking of not being afraid- I was NOT expecting some of the heavy themes to be tackled! Homophobia, suicide, regrets, grief and even depression are all themes & topic presented in this series. Since the beginning I was little worried of the execution & direction. But the series handles it really delicately & with compassion. But more on another day. So this movie! Yk, quite frankly I didn’t like Ugetsu for a while but as we continued throughout… I realized I was making bad assumptions about him. Feelings can be so hard! The way he more or less mentors Mafuyu warms my heart! Their friendship was so sweet and I adore that they STILL keep contact despite being so far away. I was a little sad to hear him leave Japan but he says it’s not permanent per se. Wherever his journey leads him with music.. I wish him nothing but the best! He deserves to be happy and whole too. Seeing him moving forward reminded me how painful letting go can be. Even if you accept things as they are… you can’t help but still feel hurt. Only time will remedy those emotions. I like that in some ways Mafuyu too! He finally has someone he could talk to & in some ways.. relate. 😔 So yeah- we get to see Yuki’s mom in the film & see how grief is affecting them all personally and with each other. Thankfully no one is blaming each other but it seems like everyone is licking their wounds alone. 😭 Hiiragi is sort of the exception here because he cried not only for Yuki but for Mafuyu as well. You’d think losing a loved one would bring people closer to one another but that’s not always the case. I love your analysis on Mafuyu because I also don’t like miscommunication but this can certainly be an exception considering the events that took place. (And his previous trauma with his dad when he expressed himself) Speaking of communication, Ueno is a grumpy sweet bean! A “disaster gay” made laugh out loud. He’s trying okay 😂 it’s his first timing living too. Abajdnfjfcjf- I had a blast seeing him rock with Hiiragi’s band too. It creates some cute and hilarious banter with his old band. Love the little chaos and jealousy we see from Mafuyu towards the end. The song Yuki was working on being completed by Hiiragi, Ueno, and Shizu was a compelling development. We already saw them working on it in the last movie but this time… Mafuyu got to hear it. Ughhh this was phenomenal! Anywho.. with each new installment I like that it always delves into the emotional complexities of these characters, set against a backdrop of music & personal turmoil. Not so much with Haruki and Kaji here though haha but that’s cause they sorted that out in the earlier movie. There’s a lot more I wanna say but I can’t put my thought into words LOL. Thank you sooo much for mentioning some stuff from the manga cause it adds to the context with the anime adaptation. I’m happy to hear that they did a great job! Also you and Hiiragi sharing a birthday makes total sense! What do the kids say? Real recognizes real haha. I’ve spend the last few days watching the reaction and discussion and it was a ton of fun! I’m so looking forward to talking more on the discord. Annie your pfp is suppose to be a person or a cinnamon roll? I can’t tell 😆 Thanks for putting this on my radar Romania! Ahhhhhhhh- this was fantastic I can’t say that enough
