Chihayafuru: Episode 13 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*FORFEITING HEADPHONE WARNING*

THIS SERIES! To tease, to frustrate, to inspire, and to pile on the angst and backstory at the halfway point in the FIRST season like this -- show -- what all do you have planned for us?! This episode is absolutely wild and I have so many thoughts about it -- but hey, what else did you expect from Omi Jingu?!

Chihayafuru: Episode 13 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Comments

This episode was SO EMOTIONAL! Especially with Arata’s storyline! I don’t blame you! Yeah, it was great to finally see what caused Arata to distance himself from Karuta! Yeah, I think leaving Arata alone with him was A CHOICE and he was a teenager and I do agree that’s an unfair responsibility on his shoulder…these kids and their NOT REALLY AMAZING PARENTS all around, I tell you! But yeah, none of these kids complain about what their folks have done to them so I agree it speaks highly of them! I realllllly wanted to see Tsutomu’s first win - how dare you, mangaka! I was NOT expecting Chihaya getting sick in this episode AT ALL. Did not see it coming whatsoever so it’s wild that we got a storyline like this THIS early in the series! Taichi has grown so much and that catch of Chihaya is VERY iconic, swoon worthy and shows his growth as a character - it speaks a lot for him to let Arata – his would-be rival to take care of her and pull one for the team! Ooohhh, that is a great note about someone getting sick and it affect their team winning – interesting that it’s been both Chihaya and Arata – curious if way down the line Taichi will get in on the germs! 😛But that’s a great point about the callback! UGH – I don’t know when we’re getting Taichi and Arata interacting again, but I’m really ready to see what it will give us! Thank you for the comment!

Be Happy

It finally did it, this episode had me so close to tears. Getting those moments with Arata and his grandfather was so devastating and illuminating. I can totally understand why Arata is so conflicted about Karuta after that whole thing. One thing that frustrates me, though, is his parents leaving Arata to care for his grandpa alone. Yes, I bet it’s hard for them, seeing someone they love like this and having to give up on many things in their lives to care for him, for all we know, this might have been the first time the mom left to do something for herself; and yet, Arata was a teenager that shouldn’t have to give up, or choose between going to the Karuta competition or care for his grandpa, that’s his parents’ job, and an unfair responsibility to put on his shoulders. It speaks highly of Arata that he doesn’t complain at all about having to do it, it does, but I also don’t blame him at all for taking the first chance he got to go do what he wanted. Aside from that, yeah, not seeing Tsutomus first win is frustrating as well. Chihaya getting the fever treatment this episode made me gasp. I was not expecting it, and I felt so bad for her. Look, Taichi has consistently made me gasp and swoon, and him catching Chihaya like that was so swoon-worthy. I totally appreciate Taichi stealing himself and putting Chihaya and the teams’ needs above his jealousy, and letting Arata care for Chihaya. The little detail of Chihaya telling Arata that she wanted to win with her team reminded me of when they were younger, and all Chihaya wanted was to win with her team, Arata and Taichi, and how to this point she has not being able to do it either time because someone gets sick, Arata the first time around and now herself. It was a cool little callback. And just like that, all the players are back in game, and I’m not ready for the grade a drama that Taichi and Arata interacting again is sure to create xD

Lurker here 👋👋 I had a gut feeling for years now that you would adore this series and these reactions have been such a great part of my week. So don’t worry I have been loving your chihayafuru reactions! I just don’t have a lot of spare time anymore unfortunately to comment. I always like to play the game of ‘what thumbnail from the episode are they going to use?’ For this episode I did think “is Romania gunna do a Arata themed one or use Taichi holding Chihaya?” (which has lived rent free in my mind for a decade!!!). But the fact that during the review you said that you are 50/50 on the love triangle made really laugh cause it’s literally reflected in your choice of thumbnail! ‘Our feelings’ at the end is soo important to me. It’s easy to forget sometimes that Taichi really cares about Arata too. His emotions are defiantly complicated and twisted with jealously and the rivalry in his head but he was just as desperate as Chihaya on that train to reach Arata and express that they missed him. God I LOVE these three soo much ❤️❤️ Yuki Suetsugu is such a master at character dynamics

I'm so glad nobody spoiled this episode. Not spoilers, but a note for moderators: Just a heads up, the episode after 15 is a recap, although it does have small "omake" clips mixed in. I forget if they call it episode 16 or episode 15.5. I'm not sure how Romania handles those, if she skips them, watches them off screen or reacts to them.
