Most would state that Itachi and Nagato had the most tragic backstories. But the ones who've had the harshest childhoods are arguably Hashirama and Madara. The time period in which they grew up is called the Era of the Warring States. Villages didn't exist at time so shinobi clans waged war against each other and worked as mercenaries to the highest bidder. Shinobi were afraid to reveal their surnames in fear of retaliation from years of warfare. Children from the moment of their birth were bred to be soldiers, leading to a very high mortality rate. Most of these child soldiers never lived to adulthood. Hashirama and Madara lost all of their siblings, save for one, to war. It is because of all the needless deaths that both boys strove to change the world for better by building a village where conflict could end through strength and stability.
