Some Behind-The-Scenes on Fire Emblem Fanbook

This will be the first time where I will be going in-depth with my thought process with some of my pieces. Let's begin!

So initially, I had planned on going to Comiket in the Spring of 2020 (before the big pandemic hit). It was cancelled, while I was still working on it. I wasn't really thinking of a theme at the time, except for the fact that I drew whoever came to mind. As a result I was a little bit iffy about the contents. When it was announced it wouldn't happen, I wanted to take the time to sharpen up my skills and think thoroughly who would be in the book, and apply for Comiket again.

I was set on drawing every major heroine figure from the Fire Emblem Series, in their re-classed outfits (with a small exceptions of some). It was going to be a lot of work since I tend to go pretty hard on stuff I'm really passionate about. 😂

I started working on the new content right after Legendary Lilina was dropped in FEH, which was around the end of December 2020.

I already drew her back in older scrapped version of my FE book (in January 2020):

I wanted to approach Lilina differently this time around and give her more courage and strength. I hope I will have a little bit of extra time before my deadline to add a few more finishing touches on her. ☺

Eirika will be in the book as well (I hope people know how much I like Eirika simply by how many times I draw her haha). I always do my best to draw her the best I can, but I feel like when you have a favorite character you want to draw, you can't help but to give nothing less than perfection.

While I absolutely had fun drawing her, it made me realize how much I still have a long way to go to reach to my ideal drawing. I think one thing I was very pleased with, was experimenting was the rainbow-ish marble material on the shoulder plates and on the breastplate. Also because I had the lineart, I was able to use some of it for the current new one I would be including in the book.

Originally I was going to have her in her CYL outfit for the book, but I was not satisfied with how I drew her, despite that I was decently close to done. I knew I was absolutely was not going to be happy, so I mustered up a new blank drawing canvas, and began thinking of a better picture.

I am really happy I decided to, because I am quite proud of how she looks so far. I need to add a few more finishing touches and adjustments, and make sure I don't use too much time with her, otherwise other drawings won't be finished... Also, she will be getting a two-page spread, so look forward to it. 😊

Finally, let's move on to a finished piece that I've already uploaded its entirety on twitter.

Byleth originally had a different pose before I came to draw a more symmetrical, serious looking piece. Originally I wanted to draw her lamenting on the fact Sothis would no longer be there in a form she can speak to. It was going to be an emotional piece, but.... I felt like it stands out a little strange compared to the rest of the book, so I scrapped the idea.

So instead, I took one of my Celica WIPs for the book, and thought it would fit more with what I wanted to portray with Byleth. Mila got replaced by Sothis, Celica got replaced by Byleth, and Julia got Byleth's pose.

As I was sketching, I'm like "YEAH this is pretty cool, NOW I'M GONNA ADD ALL THE RELICS" I was so dead-set on adding it even though I know how much extra time it would take to draw, and get them right. Thank goodness there were an even amount of relics because I wanted to make sure that the relics were positioned in a way that it looked good compositionally. I didn't want them to look "flat" so I had to angle the weapons just slightly for them to appear 3D. I think it was worth doing to add a bit of extra flavor to the piece.

Getting the color/effect on Sothis was a tad difficult, the end results reminded me of how their final Smash looks like, and decided it was good enough to leave it at that.
