And the first season, the entire point of Damon "causing a problem then being the one to fix it" is to show his humanity flickering back every once in a while, as per his storyline/arc. He's operating on no humanity/not caring then gets moments of letting it back in a bit and caring. That duality/inner yo-yoing going on with him is the whole point......
