Holiday Season Randomness/Challenge?

Okay, so we're into November now, which is pretty much the beginning of the holiday season here in the US. Last year's holiday season was mostly a wash for me because A) I'm an adult and therefore have very few needs or wants (or can get those things for myself), which means the orgy of greed at Christmas is largely lost on me. And B) all food was a source of misery and sadness because most of it tasted terrible. Now, in answer to the inevitable question, that food thing has gotten better-ish. It's better in the sense that the smell of most food no longer makes me wince or want to vomit. That's a huge improvement for which I'm infinitely grateful.

It is not better in the sense that many, many food still don't taste the way I know they're supposed to taste. They're not gag-inducing, but many things are still not pleasurable to eat. And I still can't have anything with garlic in it. Garlic still smells and tastes like something straight out of a chemistry lab. The same goes for onions and anything else in that family of plants. This is still very, very sad.

That being said, some things actually taste like what they're supposed to taste like. My tongue and nostrils still process most pastries, candies, and cold drinks in the way I think they should. So, this year, I'd like to add some new things to my holiday food list. Specifically, I'd like recommendations for things that wouldn't normally appear on an American table.

Things already on my list include:

Stollen

Panettone

Buche de Noel

So, if you're from somewhere other than the US, or your family has carried on food traditions from somewhere else, drop some suggestions below. Thanks! There will probably be pictures or, if I'm feeling very adventurous, videos at some point! Drink suggestions are also welcome, not just solid foods. I'm always looking for interesting new drink options. Right now, my favorite drink is an Australian brand of root beer.

If someone comes up with a really great idea, they might even get a Christmas card or present from me.

Comments

It's one of the lesser known things that can happen post-covid. Most people recover eventually, but apparently I'm on the slow side of that. I'm about 18 months in. But since I am recovering, I'll probably be back to normal in another six months or so.

Eric, what happened that made the taste of food like that for you? I'm so sorry that you have to endure that.

Endgame

Shwarma. Specially chicken shwarma. I love it.
