Adventures in Moving

So, last night was an adventure. I had a bit of plumbing problem that involved a lot of water all over the floor. The problem itself wasn't that hard to fix, but it was also something that couldn't wait for two days for a maintenance ticket. So, I got to do that. The real hassle was dealing with the clean-up process, which was long winded. By the time everything was dried, it was like 5 in the morning. At which point I was tired, sweaty, grumpy, and in need of a shower. Hence, no chapter.

Things ought to stabilize a bit for the next few days, though. There is a bit more packing I can do, but I'm sort of in a holding pattern until I actually get the keys to my new place. That should happen at the end of this week. In the meantime, I've packed up most of the low-hanging fruit (off-season clothes, infrequent use pots and pans and kitchen gadgets, etc.) and moved it to a storage unit. There's also a bunch of stuff I've packed that I could just take directly to the new apartment to clear out some space but that I don't want to leave in a storage unit without temperature control.

For example, I have totes filled with art supplies. It's not the kind of thing I'm inclined to trust a mover to deal with because once that bottle of jet black india ink spills, there's no saving anything it touches. For anyone who doesn't have history with art supplies, things like paints, inks, specialty markers, linseed oil, and specialty paper products do not play well with high temperatures and uncontrolled humidity. So, those things have to stay in my current apartment instead of a storage unit until I am ready to move them.

I've also ordered most of the things I should need in the new place, which consists primarily of furniture and a couple of appliances. I'm holding off on things like a couch and a TV stand until I get a better feel for and accurate measurements of the new place. I very much do not want to be the guy on the second floor who orders a couch that won't fit through the door or a TV stand that dominates the room because it's so stupidly big relative to the available space.

Anyway, that's the kind of stuff that I've been thinking about and doing. Anyone else have interesting things going on?

I’m on day 10 of a two week motorcycle tour of Idaho, Montana, BC, Alberta and Washington state. Such is retirement.

Moving is such a massive, long winded hassle. It's like playing whack a mole. A new minor issue you've never thought about pops up every few minutes. It's exhausting. I've got nothing interesting personally. August is my wind down time of year, with very little/nothing happening. Exploring First Descendant. Minor work from home. My precious little beagle. That sort of thing.
