"Into the Unknown"/"The Unknown"~ Over The Garden Wall Eps 9+10

It's essentially a southern Gothic reskin of Dantes inferno. It's one of my absolute favorites. I love your channel btw

Yeah, I don't know if Morgan reads these or if this is for us after the first day. The place where lost things fade away is the best interpretation I've read.

Chapter 9: 10:45-10:51. That voice... wtf🤣🤣🤣. Omg, I know for a Fact, of I, growing up, ran into a kid that had that kinda voice... I'd laugh in their face! I wouldn't be able to be serious around them🤣🤣🤣 17:05, "You'll be no good to your brother dead. I was never any good to him alive either." So *The Woods* are more like a place in-between life and death. Now that Wirt is aware that he and his brother Greg are nearly dead, he can try and return to the living side. 18:20-19:17, what a story. 19:20-19:30, that's a good theory right there🤔. Idk, maybe parts of the brain still works when you die. Like, it takes a minute or so, for it to stop functioning. Idk. Maybe heaven and hell exist. I kinda want to believe that our souls are going somewhere. That it's not just nothing. I want there to be something after death. That's the closest thing to religious I'll ever get, lol😅 19:53, "LORE dump😂." 🤣🤣😂😂. I love getting any kind of lore on your family Morgan. It's quite interesting.. except your father. He sounds like an A**hole😑 Chapter 10 (finale): 24:02-24:19, complete silence. 24:20, "You mean to tell me, that all of those trees he was chopping down... were lost souls." Indeed they are. All those trees with black oil, used to be souls. Now, turned into some form of food for the beasts precious lamp 24:45. Don't overthink it. You'll get a headache from it. Trust me, I've done it before. 31:00. Yup. The Beast is a nasty creature. He prays on lost souls and those who are unfortunate enough to work for him, because they fear him. The Beast tries to so hard to be intimidating, that people forget, he's a helpless little creature, who depends on people fearing him, so much, that they never realize, if the light in the lantern goes out, he dies! 31:12, "WTF was that?!" That's the beast. Apparently, he hates it whenever light is shed upon him. 35:40. I wanna say that everything that transpired/happened in this show, is that it actually happened. But I honestly don't know. I think it differs from person to person. It's all in how you as a person interpret this. My guess is that it actually happened! That they were in some in-between place. I could be completely wrong about this. Last edit: I liked your reactions to this show. Perfect for Halloween/Spooky season. But yeah, I obviously didn't laugh as much in these last few chapters, because it got too dark even for me to laugh about it. But in any case, I'm glad you liked it, and I'm gonna go and watch your most recent MAWS reaction. See ya Morgan. Bye👋🏼😁

I was so excited to see you react to these final episodes. These ones are the episodes that make me cry. Basically everything after the train has me on the verge of tears. I love the idea of this in between type of place. I love seeing Wirt grow and go to save Greg. I love the growth of the woodsman and his decision to take the risk and give up wandering to go home only for it to turn out his daughter was already there. And I am always happy to see Beatrice reunited with her family. Its a really weird creepy show but it has something special to it. Im glad you enjoyed it!

This ending gets more fantastic every time. This is such a big Halloween tradition in my house, thank you so much for watching it. I'm glad you enjoyed.

I love the Beast's design and voice so fucking much. And when I say "design" I don't mean his real appearance, but his silhouette, it's just so simple but effective in that you don't know what he really looks like, adding to the mystique and feeling of danger. And his voice, god his voice is so perfect. Genuinely one of my favorite antagonists. They did so well in handling him, only having him show up occasionally and not for too long each time, and even when revealing his true form, it's only for a few frames.

Fun fact: in "Into The Unknown", you can see some of the names of some characters we met throughout the show on the gravestones!

Thumbnail: Watching this as I am watching CR C2 for the first time (at Happy Fun Ball pt. 2 after the creation of Willy) - It gives me Laughing Hand vibes and is just unsettleing to begin with.

These last two episdes really tie everything together. A lot of it is up to interpretation but Pat McHale and his crew stated that The Unknown is a place where lost things end up. Lost stories, lost souls, myths. It is said on the Wikipedia page: "According to the official Art of Over the Garden Wall Book: The Unknown is the place between life and death, between dreams and reality." So Wirt and Greg really were on the brink of death, however that doesn't necessarily mean the place is not real. Jason Funderburker, the frog, still had the glowing bell inside him at the end there which he swallowed in The Ringing of the Bell and we saw in the epilogue that all the other characters we met during the show still exist and live their lives there. This journey was a way for Wirt to grow and overcome his insecurities, standing up to the beast in the end and saving his brother, which enabled him to return home. Greg also matured a bit by admitting to stealing the rock and returning it at the end. For me, the show is just a beautiful atmospheric place to be in and get lost in once in a while, as the titular lyrics say: "If dreams can't come true, then why not pretend?" There are also many, many hidden details that will become clear only when rewatching the series after knowing how it ends. I really recommend you revisit all the episodes or watch some Youtube-compilations of all the hints and details the animators and writers snuck in there. One of the more obvious ones is the fact that, at the beginning of each episode, we can hear a train whistle in the distance. The one of the same train that almost hit Wirt and Greg and caused them to fall down the hill and almost drown. Also, The Unknown changes slowly from Autumn to Winter over the course of the show. Trees lose the leaves, the wind gets colder until there is only snow, which could hint at Wirt and Greg slowly losing the "warmth" of their lives. Okay, this comment is already way too long, so I'll stop. It was a lot of fun watching this with you. Take care.

There are loads of essays and lore dumps on all the symbolism and significance thereof in this show. Not only artistically gorgeous, but so layered. My take on the soft focus at the end was that the Woodsman was reunited with his daughter. But given that she had passed... well... only one way to reunite with those you've lost... I'm a mess every time I get to this scene. I wish I'd had this when I was in high-school. Wirt thinking he's an absolute mess and that everyone is making fun of him when actually he's quite well liked. Particularly by Sara. And Jason Funderberker being a non-threat. Wirt self-sabotaging and accepting defeat before he even tries. A lot of us who grew up "losers" really let a few crappy people taint our entire view of ourselves. "Kids show". Yeah... tell that to Grabby McGee who was hanging out outside the storage shed. Blink and you miss it moment, but that guy was absolutely copping a feel on his rather unimpressed potential date. Again with the atmosphere. I grew up in the 80s and this nailed the Trick-or-Treat atmosphere back then. Streetlights reflecting off rain slicked streets. And back in The Unknown, I can practically feel that late October snow storm. I'm so glad you picked this up. It is a necessity for me to watch every year. The music. The art. The atmosphere. This is a modern classic. I'm happy you enjoyed it.

I love the beast as villain so much. He fits perfectly with the main theme of the show: things aren't what they seems, there's exemple of that in every épisodes, multiple times sometimes. The dog not being the beast, the townsfolks of potfields being non skeletons, Jimmy the "gorilla", the ghost woman being real, aunty whisper trying to help, ect… it's also there in bigger points, like how the cute blue bird, named after the woman who guided Dante into Heaven, was actually leading the brother to a deadly trap or our vision of wirt back home, from his tale we were expecting him to be the classic nerd loser, in love with the popular girl but the "chad" jason loveblocking him (it's not a random choice that the first place Wirt was sent to look for Sarah was a football field) but as it turns out, Wirt is well liked by everyone, Sarah especially, and jason is an even bigger nerd who have absolutely no shot at the girl. and so to go back to the Beast; he is presented as the master of the forest, the incarnation of the dark, every mention of him is building his aura. But what really is he ? A scared soul fighting tooth and nail against his own demise, he is no master of the forest, even when Greg, a naive 8yo was at his complete mercy, he couldn't transform him into a tree, he had to give him impossible task after impossible task so that the forest finally take him. He couldn't take back the lantern from a 14yo and when that kid called his bluff he was almost on his knees begging. Without his lies the beast is Nothing, and that's why I love him so much as a mysical villain, in a sea of eldritch monster he is the equivalent of a small, terrified dog barking as loud as possible, hoping no one notice he is shaking to his core
