OVA the hurdle

Comments

Why did you shut Macross Plus like that?? without even a commentary??

Alex Tapisevic

Would have suggested War in the Pocket but guess I paid too much attention to that 2 hour limit, definitely gets my thumbs up though, one of the best things to ever come out of Gundam. Not an OVA or movie, but would like to make a Weird Wednesday suggestion for Noein (2005), an early Satelite series directed by Akane Kazuki (of Escaflowne fame, though I'm not sure that show is all that well known these days. Great early example of genre-mashing though, Shoujo + Mecha in this case, I'd recommend it highly too if you didn't already have enough mecha on your plate). Noein is not the most amazing show ever, but weird and fun with a lot of experimentation in the animation (results: sometimes awesome, other times not so much). Also it's set in a lovingly recreated Hakodate, making a nice change form the more usual modern day Japan settings.

Just upload Vinland bro. That’s all I’ll take pls

Didn't realize this was happening ! id love to recommend the newest Masaaki Yuasa film, Inu-Oh, which seems to have been severely overlooked ever since it came out for some reason. To me, its his best film to date (hard to rival some of his tv anime tho) and a really special synthesization of his ethos into what might have been his last major directorial work.

If you still want some more recommendations for OVAs, here are a few: Birdy the Mighty, Vampire Princess Miyu, Moldiver, Magic User's Club, Green Legend Ran, Shamanic Princess, Devil Hunter Yohko, Megazone 23, Twilight Q, Mermaid Forest, Fire Tripper, Laughing Target, To-Y, Radio City Fantasy, Call Me Tonight, Devilman

There is an anime of Alien 9, not sure why only the manga popped up, but if you've already read the manga, that's cool, no need to retread old ground. Glad to hear you liked it.

Woodsie89

He already did BB Fish on OVADrive

If you want some other interesting OVA's here's a few. Space Fantasia 2001 Nights, The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Age of Heroes(1991), Roots Search. And I know it was brought up with Mellowlink but the Votoms series would be a fun ride after CCA its very unique. Then there's Gilgamesh (2003) its not an OVA but its fairly interesting with a unique art style. And finally Macross Plus, its recommended for a very good reason, the art/animation is pronominal. I would happily lose a week or two of Gundam for it. Cheers!

If you're still taking OVADrive Suggestions, might I suggest B.B. Fish. It's a one episode OVA that i feel falls into the category of "is quite bad, but is unique in its badness, and has some interesting stuff to parse from it anyways"

I dont know if this been covered yet but Burn-Up! (1991) ova a fun one, it interesting that in the credit scenes in a corner they go over production sketches, extra deleted scenes, further development of the series and unfinished drawings that quickly pop up as pop music plays.

Black Magic M-66 is an awesome anime peer of MD Geist in my braincase ... Blood the last Vampire (and Blood+ and Blood-C) are tasty ... Jinroh: Wolf Brigade is a great smackdown Military-fest ... Time of Eve is on my PTW, looks intriguing indeed ... Bludgeoning Angel I'd finish watching if I could find the episodes (cute girls doing homicidal things FTW) ... Cutie Honey is always a fun dive ... Gall Force has a great Bebopish vibe ... Dominion Tank Police is SUUUUPER AD Police and Bubblegum coded MUST WATCH ... IRIA Zeiram also captures that Bebop vibe, very good ... I know I personally voted Sol Bianca on the poll-not-poll. Where go?

Oh yeah!? Did I skip it somehow? I'll put it on the list

Sorry if I missed you say but did you see "Now and Then, Here and There"?

About the struggle with ovadrive, I genuinely don't think you can run out of stuff if you're willing to give everything a chance, it's just a matter of being okay if some of it turns out to not give much reaction value. I think that's a fair concern, but imo if you have that threshold of standards you WILL run out, not bc there's not enough out there but I think that threshold can only shrink the pool more and more. It can be tough but I think you can learn a lot from trash! πŸ˜… As you said beautiful garbage haha (btw I'm the one who suggested Nasu, as it happens my company is releasing it on Blu-ray for the first time in America this March!!) LOL and we (AnimEigo) have also released Time of Eve on Blu-ray last month!
