There is a nice thing about the arc of Rowena’s bond with Sam. Like her son, Rowena’s graduating to villain and friend to the boys. That is true about this being atypical that a powerful character gravitates more toward Sam. Yeah, both have rubbed off on the other in equal measure. The acting in those scenes is great. Hurts to hear Jess say that it’s looking likely that Crowley won’t be coming back. Be nice if the show was a bit more upfront about it by now as it’s getting mean by this point. Biggest shock is Rowena having the American beer with the boys. I’m still concerned by Dean saying that The Butterfly Effect is “Ashton’s second-best movie” as he described. What the hell is number one, or do I not want to know?

I absolutely adore this episode. Honestly its probably my favorite of season 13. Sam and Rowena completely stole the show.
Their relationship has grown so much over the years.
From the murderous, manipulative witch we met in season 10, that Sam literally kidnapped and kept in chains to help free Dean from the Mark of Cain, to the witch who sold Sam out to Lucifer in season 11 and was a big part of Lucifer walking free, to the one who helped defeat the Darkness, and started to become less evil, less selfish and started being an ally to the boys in season 12… Rowena’s growth has probably been the most redeemable arc we have seen, from villain to friend in the show (maybe challenged only by Crowley).
And I love that her arc is so closely entangled with Sam. Almost any time we have one of these characters in the show, a powerful force that either helps or hurts the boys, their stories are often closely tied to Dean. Cas, Crowley, even Charlie and Kevin for the most part (even, oddly enough, Gadreel), they mostly revolve their stories around Dean.
But from the moment we met her, Rowena really has gravitated towards Sam. They worked on the Mark together, on the Cage, trying to put Lucifer back, bonding over their Lucifer trauma, saving Dean from the memory curse… their Frenemy story line has been so entertaining to watch. You can see Rowena rubbing off on Sam- with her, he’s sassier, bigger, more confident. And Sam’s influence on Rowena is undeniable- he took a malicious, cold hearted witch and showed her humanity, compassion and kindness, probably one of the only people who ever has.
Their interactions, Sam’s grief and obvious pain at discovering he’ll kill her, Rowena’s shock at that and her guilt over having to use him to talk to Death, Sam’s defending her and begging her to listen, to not force his hand, Rowena’s begging for Sam’s advice and help… nobody would have thought that the two who met to make a deal about saving Dean from the mark of Cain would have ended up here. Both Ruth and Jared just absolutely slayed this episode.
