Heard similar rumblings that these Deathclaws are pretty big deals in this franchise. How you say they are the types of threats that are “especially famed for making even the most expert players crap their pants when they show up”, sounds like if the Yuuzhan Vong ever make it into the Disney canon. I’d have the look like the Ghoul has at the end of this episode. I’d imagine that Ella loved going Jinx by way of Chuck Connors. Show seems to dance a jig with the tone, so I’ll see how that one goes. Can’t offer anything about the New Vegas drama, though this was fun. Tis great seeing the Ghoul get a kick out of it, and yeah, his smile drops some when Lucy says killing ghouls is okay. As if he was kind of thinking, “You’re high as a kite, so I’m going to let that one slide, but pump your breaks before you make it a habit.” We can save the Cheers fun for later. The suckup looks to be the one to cause more trouble. Not heard any specific Hannah Montana jokes. Know Norm was in that as Rico, and it caused a huge, “HO-LY CRAP!!” response from me when I figured that out. Been so long since I’ve seen any of it, so I got nothing. Very enjoyable seeing Betty dealing with the carousel of stress that came from the snack budget backfiring on her. She probably would default to the Simpsons reference. Stephanie is getting a bit scary with the mask slipping. In addition to the whole thing of no one able to get used to the flipped layout speaking to us, it is a nice surprise that it served as a sort of Chekov’s gun leading to Woody hearing the big dramatic conversation. Chet finding the ID, well, I always default to the George of the Jungle quote, “Every story gets to have a really big coincidence and here’s ours.” So long as such coincidences don’t pile up, and so long as they aren’t continuously very improbable without even in-story justifications/lampshading any of it, I can run with this one. Considering how his time trying to order a burger, then a pretzel, or just whatever’s hot and fresh at Baskin Robbins, it’s not a tremendous surprise that Thaddeus is that dumb. It’s thankfully not stretched out TOO much, and I roll with it after Dane instantly clocks what’s up. Maximus is now completely disillusioned after Quintus posed the question of was Milton trying to tell us that being bad was more fun than being good. (Speaking of that scene, Jennings taking a bite out of the apple right after saying that is one of the best, most underrated gags in that movie.) Seeing a pattern, yes, about powder kegs going off, with a certain satisfaction at the one part. Shows how I barely retain any of the Frozen songs as I had to google that one. And the one you used was the big eleven o’clock number which, as I recall, was the best song of the film, as eleven o’clock numbers, like the villain songs often are the best. That’s slightly embarrassing on my part. In any event, looking forward to how the second half of this is going to go.

I was introduced to the Andrews Sisters through being big into Abbott and Costello as a kid. After seeing them just in the background in several movies, it was a real treat when one of them got a major role in In the Navy. Rather than Misery, my big example of this kind of scene for a while has been from Breach, where the hero forgets which briefcase pocket he took the files from. Especially since the actual guy confirmed it really did happen exactly as shown in the movie, and he still isn't sure if he got it right. I listened to Elvis Duran's show every day going to high school, and one of his big things was bringing up out of nowhere "I was in Die Hard with a Vengeance for five seconds." So when I finally saw the movie that was a big Rick Dalton scene.

From what I've picked up from fans, the Deathclaw is perhaps the iconic monster of the entire franchise, and I've seen some reviews say this is probably the absolute limit of how far the show could have gone without featuring them. And apparently they're especially famed for making even the most expert players crap their pants when they show up, much like Tanks in Left 4 Dead or, yes, Bloaters in The Last of Us. I've also heard it's mostly practical with just some minor CGI for things that would absolutely not be physically possible, which is always great to see. Ella must have been thrilled to get this script, with a whole new level of performance being given to her as she essentially gets to be Jinx in live action. So much of the show is a comedy that I wasn't too surprised the tone went this way, even with a story that could easily be played more seriously (and maybe will be down the line). There was more complaining about the state of New Vegas and its implications for the lore, but I'm just having fun seeing her blow up Elvii. And Walton does some nice work where he fully accepts this is his co-star's show but still works in some great reactions, most of all his face when she says killing ghouls is okay of "...I'll give you a pass this time." We get just barely enough of Norm this week to get to do our impression of the rest of Cheers, but I'm already salivating to see more of where both the new and probably unindoctrinated girl and the professional suckup will complicate his life. A couple people were cracking Hannah Montana jokes, which I've never seen a single second of so I can't comment. Rather surprisingly, my biggest engagement this episode was back at the vault, where Betty finds herself caught even more off guard than having to sing June is Busting Out All Over. Although given that this is all about an extremely finite resource, I wouldn't be surprised if this ends with the incest group begging her for help, and getting "I'm not great at speeches, but it's truly gratifying to leave you all wallowing in the mess you've made. You're screwed, thank you, bye." Annabel O'Hagan is really stepping up this season as Steph gets to show more of her true self, and it was a lovely surprise that the whole thing of no one able to get used to the flipped layout wasn't just a throwaway gag but setting up a perfectly believable way for Woody to overhear the whole thing. Not so believable is Chet just happening to find her old ID at the exact same time by pure coincidence, but everything else about this story is done so well that I can let it go. Some bits of Maximus' story were kind of a chore as Thaddeus is made even more dumb just for the sake of some cheap gags, but again the rest makes up for it, as at long last his disillusionment is complete. Quintus completes the job from last episode, and finally Maximus can see he's just as bad as everyone else. He's a bit long winded, he doesn't translate well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible. So he'll walk through the night stumbling blindly toward the light, and do the next right thing. And however we got there, I fully agree with that one Elder about how cool it is to see this powder keg finally go off (bit of a theme this season, I've noticed). At the season's halfway point you can very much feel them ramping everything up now that the setup is done with and we can fully just be in the fun part, and so far I have no reason to doubt they'll pull it off.

Figured you’d still be dealing a bit with the cold given how you described it. Nice to hear that there’s an improvement. Hear you on the shit sleep. Think 2003 was the last time I had good sleep. Hell of a flashback of the Ghoul’s days of being a marine. We love him being a mensch in making sure his buddy was ok. Leads to the reveal of some big boys. Deathclaws, I believe is the name that the fans were a mite loud about informing us. You liken it to those big motherfuckers in The Last of Us, sounds about right. Just hope we don’t have any of them running like the one big motherfucker looking like he wanted to be that one Uruk-hai that was running like he was carrying the Olympic torch to the tune of any of John’s four Olympic themes. Not too much with Norm. You spoke of it being one too many episodes without Norm. Yeah, well, I had one episode without the Ghoul last season, and it was more than one too many, so it balances out. It seems that the one guy is getting suspicious of Norm, and Norm knows it. Fun times ahead with that fueling your anxiety, yes, Jess? Rising tension in the vaults, though nice that Reg has the nice social club/loophole for other people to get food and drink going. Gets a smile how we both had a little dance to the Andrews Sisters. Small surprise on that one. Again, the vaulties contending with the mirrored vaults, and the subsequent directional issues is a little too goddamn real. Reminds me of about a decade ago when the local Jewel rearranged the layout of the store after having been the same for as long as I could remember. Took me twenty minutes to figure out where they moved the tin foil, for example. The scene with Stephanie and Betty was a bit scary. Woody followed protocol, and now we’re worried about him. And Chet makes the horrifying discovery that, gulp, sob, Stephanie is Canadian. Love your quip there. Here’s hoping that when Chet put the stuff back that he remembered to ensure that the ceramic penguin is facing due south. Love how Dane clocks Thaddeus. They go along with Maximus’s plan pretty quickly. Sweet how you knew that Maximus was not going to kill Quintus. The ghoulish revelation upsets Quintus more than when Simon said about planting the bomb in the school. Interesting turn of events. And it gets a laugh how you got sick of him being long winded more than a Quentin Tarantino character is; at least those monologues, like Bill’s Superman monologue are entertaining. Hope Dane is going to be ok. And they run off into the desert. You are right about the sand. After all, it is coarse and rough and irritating. And it gets EVERYWHERE too. (Hey, you set that up. I was supposed to not acknowledge that one?) Now to our Ghoul, Lucy, and good girl trio. Obviously, you didn’t care for the IV scene. The feeling is mutual, as I yelled, “No, don’t pull the, DON’T FUCKING PULL THE- GODDAMN IT!!!” Lucy now has a bit of addiction to drugs. Makes sense that she’s got an addiction. It’s like in the olden days: doctors just throw morphine at ya, and you get hooked. Happened to Bela. Took him about a decade to get clean, to somewhat address how you observed that it takes some time to get off the drugs. So, Lucy’s got that fun to look forward to seeing as she committed to doing more drugs. Nice of the Ghoul to advise against smoking. “One addiction at a time.” as he said, he’s right about that. They’re now at Vegas, but no Hank meeting. It wouldn’t shock me if they draw out the Hank situation. Much though the Ghoul calls Lucy out on not knowing what it is she really wants, he seems impressed with her exact words in response to the one question. He also had such a great reaction to Lucy shooting up the Ghoul Kings, as I’ve been told. I laughed at how the Ghoul was endeared by Lucy living her best Chuck Connors life. She does seem to be letting out some pent-up aggression, meaning she feels a little bit better after hitting the pillow as it was. Funny how Lucy’s sick of getting sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time, making me quip, “Golden rule, motherfucker, this is what it’s like.” Just like the KOTOR days. Korriban was the most fun with that. Then we get that cliffhanger. And Lucy sees that the Ghoul is legitimately terrified for once, a fact you noticed as well, and has the appropriate realization. She’s improving on clocking red flags. Meaning she has a leg up on Anora when it comes to clocking red flags, not a terribly difficult accomplishment though that is. Yeah, the Ghoul looks horrified that the big boy is back. Then again, in many ways, the Big Boy never left. He’s always offered the same high-quality meals at competitive prices. I understand completely the fear about our good girl. Nice that you love the characters still holding their morals. Reiterating that I’m fine with that part. I just prefer it when it’s matched with smarts. See how it goes. Meantime, thank you for the fun reaction, Jess.
