Supernatural 13x18 EARLY Early Access!

Supernatural 13x18 EARLY Early Access!

Next to Bobby, Charlie is my favorite of the show. Which is weird for me as almost always, the villains are my favorites in films and shows. So, seeing Felicia back as Charlie is terrific, love Jess seeing that. They have the good thing of showing these variants of the characters. Looking forward to Bobby and Charlie sharing more scenes, if that happens, that is. The boys’ dad and the boys’ little sister working together should be great stuff. I did preemptively yell at the show to not repeat the end of season ten, yelling, “We put Charlie through that Lillian Hellman horseshit again, I’m leaving. We are NOT DOING THAT FUCKING LILLIAN HELLMAN HORSESHIT AGAIN!!!” I know you said that you don’t have as pronounced an issue with her death as others. Reiterate that her badass last stand where she dies braver than most is the one small positive. The issues are that we don’t see much of it, the writing leading to that was terrible, and the pure disgust at how offensive it was with how she’s found. My recurring joke/serious comment being that it was genuinely shocking that the writers didn’t LITERALLY stuff Charlie into a goddamn fridge. The wound from that is never going away, but having this Charlie in the mix helps balance it out. Some. Sam being “just walking trauma incarnate at this point” is a fair description. Not entirely sure that he’s the fictional character who’s suffered the most, though a case is made for him to be on the list. There is the good irony/reversal of trying to help Gabriel. I don’t mind if you still hate Gabriel. Jess still has the bone to pick with Ketch, and I still hate him something fierce, so neither of us is one to talk. Sam showing the kindness and empathy, in addition to Gabriel going through the shit that Sam can fully empathize and sympathize like when he and Rowena trauma bonded, it also speaks to the horrific treatment. Sort of like in Pulp Fiction and the plotline with Bruce Willis where there’s the thing of you can’t leave someone behind to suffer such an horrific fate, even if it is your mortal adversary. Gets something of a laugh how Jess and I had similar reactions to the porn stars in Monte Carlo business. Wasn’t even funny, though clearly, the writers find it funny. Ketch is a dark mirror for Dean. The shadowy reflection of what Dean could very well become, which explains how he hates Ketch more than Sam does. On top of the whole thing of what Ketch did to their mom. The Charlie talk does seem to spark something in Ketch. I still hate him, but I’ll deal with that later. Lucy is going through it. Get the laugh over the onslaught of prayers. Like I said, he could set up a Yahweh email for the prayers if that helps. He is at a very low point when he outright lies. A rarity for him. He’ll bullshit until the cows come home, but lying isn’t as frequent for him. The way you’ve spoken of Sam, you did figure this one would be emotional for you. He did have the pretty good plea to Gabriel. Even sharing how he too went through the “JUST when I thought I was out, they pull me BACK IN.” experience. Does wound him when Gabriel bedazzled the fuck out, as Jess put it. You can feel Dean’s pain with that. This scene is like Dean’s scene with the organ donation man in the episode where Bobby died: I’m not the older brother, but the scene is one where I just understand and feel everything about the pain Dean has there. In the Bobby episode, especially when he said, “Walk away from me.” was WAY TOO real. Here, it flares up when he yells, “EVERY TIME!!!” Likewise, you feel Sam’s pain, and the perennially and viscerally relatable little brother energy. His shell shock is on full display in that last scene, yes. See not much to say about Asmodeus. Understandable. Again, I’m a HUGE villains guy, and he’s weak. Laughed too hard at him playing with his balls, as if he’s going to yell, “Ah, but the strawberries, that’s, that’s where I had them!” Gabrie fired him Original Recipe style, so it’s all over for him. Sort of bummed that I didn’t get the chance, or at least the opportunity never presented itself to quote the one Spaceballs line, but oh well. See how the rest of the season goes.

Hear you on wanting Jess to take care of herself. I can’t talk much as that damned theatre mentality that I have makes it so that I’m worse than Jess is in powering through stuff. Bad colds. Covid was mild enough, though I still kept going to work, heavily masked whilst keeping distance. Back in 2024, I had the bad gout flareup, and I still showed up at work, barely moving still trying to work. I do not take a hint apparently. Way Jess talks about it, she has the similar stubbornness, so there is the bonding of that if nothing else.

This episode... wow. First of all, the return of the queen is amazing. Charlie is such an amazing character, and I really love how this alternate world is giving us a chance to see some of our beloved characters again, in a different way than the resurrections we have come to kind of expect from Supernatural. Not to mention, Supernatural loves letting actors play different versions or alternate selves of their characters (looking at Jared and his like 20 different versions of Sam that we've seen lol), and this is a really cool way for us to see such loved figures like Bobby and Charlie in a new way. I think Felicia and Jim are doing an incredible job of taking the soul of Charlie and Bobby, but showcasing that, they aren't the same ones we loved. It's a very cool, unique twist to the show. And then... Gabriel. And Sam and Cas. And Dean and Ketch. So much to unpack from all of them. Even Lucifer's arc. This entire season, the core theme that they keep driving home is trauma. That's the entire focus of what seems to be confronting each of our characters, especially the boys. In the beginning it was the trauma of loss, of grief that we saw Dean have to struggle his way through. Now, with Sam, its... well, honestly Sam is just walking trauma incarnate at this point. I feel like Sam, specifically since the episode where they lost Jack to Apocalypse World, is like a raw, exposed nerve, just taking hit after hit, without any time to rebuild or repair his guards. And I'll get back to him in a minute, cuz I do have more to say on him, in particular. But this episode really hits home trauma for our secondary characters as well. Primarily, we have Gabriel. He's been tortured, held prisoner, drained of his grace for years at this point. To the point where he was hiding in his own mind to try and shelter himself. And there is a bittersweet irony to the fact that it's Sam Winchester of all people, who gets through to Gabe, who coaxes him out of his shell, and helps him confront the truth. It's a mirror of what we have seen Gabe try to do with Sam before (Mystery Spot, Changing Channels etc), but whereas Gabe was brutal and cruel in how he delivered his lessons, we see Sam using a much gentler, calmer, steady approach which works wonders. It's amazing to see someone like Sam, who knows exactly what Gabe is feeling, whose been tortured so horrifically himself that he lost his mind, give that kind of empathy and kindness and softness to someone who actually once tortured him himself (sorry, i still hate Gabe for Mystery Spot lol). It really shows not only Gabe's strength, and bravery, to pull himself together and come back to himself, but also Sam's as well. Then we have Ketch and Dean. As much as we may all dislike Ketch, the fact is, he and Dean are incredibly similar. Hell, if Dean met Ketch back in season 2 or 3, they would have probably been best friends. They are both soldiers, experienced and battle hardened. They both have causes they believe in. And they both have baggage. The difference is Dean has had a chance to grow, and expand, and learn. He has had people to help him develop and become a better person (namely his brother), and he has had experiences Ketch hasn't, thats shaped his world view and changed it from just black/white, kill on sight to something deeper, more nuanced. Who knows what Ketch might be like, with people other than the BMOL around him to influence his actions. Even here, in such a short time, we see a different side to Ketch start to emerge from that conversation with Dean, and we see a softer, more compassionate man for a moment. Even Lucifer. I hate him, I fully admit that. He's a monster, but what we see him doing, the lying, manipulating angels, lashing out at everything, its all coming from a place of pain. His blaming everything on God, refusing to take accountability, it stems from the trauma of what his father did and we get touches of that here. This Lucifer has lost his true vessel, his son, his father, his brothers, the Heaven he used to know... he's spiraling because he has no way to cope with the trauma he's been through. And then... Sammy. OMG Jared this episode just ripped my freaking heart out. Those puppy dog eyes of his should be outlawed. If we are talking trauma this episode... torture and archangels are the first things to come to mind when you think Sam Winchester. Literally every single archangel we have met has tried to (or succeeded to) kill and/or torture Sam in some way. Even Cas isn't innocent in that. And here he is, surrounded by people who have hurt him, completely alone because Dean left him behind, trying desperately to help Gabriel. And its clearly not just because they need him. You can see the empathy in Sam, his desire to help Gabe because its the right thing to do. And the hope in his face. Gabe is Sam's hope, for a brief moment. An archangel is a powerful ally, and you can see Sam genuinely thinks Gabe can help them. The way he pleads and cries at his need for someone to be able to help, the desperation he is carrying... Jared deserves all the awards for that acting. And then... the devastation in Sam's face when Gabe leaves. Sam is absolutely crushed. And he is hurting, and vulnerable, and when Dean comes back, you can see Sam's PTSD on full display- the flinches at loud noises, the full body cringing from sudden movements, the shakiness, the fear in his expression. After all that time burying his own trauma to help Gabriel, and dealing with yet another attack in his own home, by demons of all things, Sam's just completely exposed. Phenomenal job by Jared, honestly one of his best episodes so far.
