HEATED RIVALRY 1x5 & 1x6 Watchalong!

Comments

Y'all picked up on a lot of nuance that a lot of other reactors missed, bravo! I'm definitely gonna stick around. <3 My recommendations for other series to cover would be either the IWTV tv series or a show from Starz called Black Sails.

I loved your reactions to this show... You really picked up on a lot of the nuances Jacob Tierney talks about in his interviews. The music selection when you listen to the lyrics gives a glimpse into the inner monologue of the characters. I will disagree with you on Shane's mom not needing to apologize and ask for forgiveness. If his parents suspected that he might be gay, they would have had to realize - FIRST - the culture of Hockey - it is still one of the least accepting leagues in male professional sports. They have banned any "rainbow" symbols - flags, tape, bands etc. Although individual teams may have gay pride nights - the league dose not support it. There is only one former player out and they did not make it to the NHL. SECOND - The pressure on Shane to be perfect - be the role model, be the POSTER BOY - the brand deals alone. So yeah - if they thought there was a chance that he might be gay - they did not give him a safe space to come out. Also - Scott coming out, does not open doors for Shane and Ilya to do the same. It is a very different situation - Scott is not involved with another player - on a different team. Think about Yuna's question - you didn't let him win? If they were to come out as a couple there would be tape of every single one of their games - and judgement would be relentless. For Scott and Kips story - I have not yet read the book, but I think the timeline was a little different than presented in this series. Because the Olympics and Cup win for Scott is the same year... and from what I can tell (only in the book - cause Canada actually won the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics) the USA won the Gold Medal - So Scott won both an Olympic Medal and the "CUP" in the same year... Probably impacting his decision to say F-it. And make the grand gesture. I do agree I hope we get a scene where we see what Scott and Ilya talk about.

Your reaction series to this was great!! I can't believe you may have auditioned for Hayden, please let us know if you find the sides. 🤣 I'd like to recommend Interview with the Vampire (2022) televisions series! It has tons of loyal followers that love reactor channels, and season 3 is coming this summer!

You're not crying, I'm crying!... You know what I mean. Haha.

A lot of people are surprised are by Ilya’s rapid transition from emotionally unavailable to "boyfriend behavior," but this shift isn't a personality inconsistency—it is the result of certainty replacing survival instincts. For years, Ilya’s self-worth was eroded by a family and a country that viewed his existence as a moral failure. To survive, he categorized Shane as a "casual hookup" to protect himself from the rejection he felt was inevitable. This wasn't coldness; it was a trauma-induced barrier. Even his mention of women on the couch in Ep 4 wasn't a manipulation to spark jealousy, but a desperate, insecure attempt to gauge if a future with Shane was even possible. At the cottage, when Shane made it perfectly clear that he wanted a long-term future with him everything changed. Once Ilya knew this without a doubt, his internal struggle ended. He now knows everything he needs to know. Because Ilya’s loyalty is absolute, once he realized he was "allowed" to love Shane without the fear of inevitable abandonment, he committed entirely. His "boyfriend behavior" is simply his natural intensity finally being given a safe place to land.

One thing i love about the adaptation is that it follows the book to a T. Also something I love and find so sad is that once Ilya decides to come out he is sacrificing the reality of never visiting his mom grave again (the only person he only cares about from his family)
