Hello, I think Micheal understands that who you surround yourself with can shape you. However, Dwayne’s friend didn’t just question Ron’s intelligence and actions (which can be questionable at times smh) he disrespected the existence of HBCU’s overall and said some pretty ignorant things, even as far as saying Hillman’s PhD program is basically pointless because they likely don’t have the “right students” to teach. Do I agree that being put in rooms with wealthy/resourceful “others” can take a person far, yes, but to make the assumption that an HBCU can’t take you far and put you in rooms with “others” is ignorance in the worse way. That was the point of the episode and what Micheal was saying.

Not every “meaningful” (at-least what you deem meaningful in your 20s) is for your overall best purpose in life. Not everyone is meant to stay in your life forever - some people are meant to be there for the season they are.
