It was 17 years between Bilbo leaving and Frodo seeing him again. Was about 4 weeks from departing the Shire until the council of Elrond. Then about a year after leaving the Shire to when the ring is destroyed. Frodo was 50 years old when they left, Sam 38. They appear the same age because Frodo stopped aging when he got the ring.

They had to create a new visual effects company to create the visual effects in that film and when it was done they had so manny computers left they did not what to do with it so Peter Jackson started developing a project so epic in scope that they could use that visual effects company again. That project became The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There would be no Lord of the Rings without The Frighteners. Worth the reaction. The film also stars Michael J. Fox in one of his last live action lead roles be for he retired and John Astin (who is the father of Sean Astin who played Sam in Lord of the Rings).
