I know you're probably just joking around, but just in case (since I've seen some people online wondering): they're acting, it's "simulated sex", they're not actually having sex on camera. The sound engineer/sound design is indeed magnificent though, as is the acting, camerawork, blocking. And the incredible work by the intimacy coordinator, Chala Hunter. Because they all make it seem so real, so natural!

I totally agree with your interpretation, especially about the figure skating scene. It drives me crazy when people express anger toward Ilya's behaviour there. Shane had no business forcing that conversation on him. Never mind that they're in Russia, where the consequences of being outed as for a famous and respected athlete would be absolutely dire; no one owes anyone an emotional conversation in public at any time.
Also, Ilya has just been humiliated by his team's loss to Latvia. In case some people don't realize this, Russia, Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland are considered the ‘Big Five’ hockey nations because their national teams are a huge step above every other country; for any one of them to be beaten by another country is a major embarrassment. With Ilya being the captain of the team that has just suffered such a painful defeat, it would be perfectly natural for him not to be in the mood to talk to Shane just because Canada is still in the tournament and has a chance at gold. There are plenty of reasons Shane should have known Ilya would not want to talk to him, and it definitely should not have taken Ilya hurting his feelings to finally make him respect Ilya's boundaries and go away.

I absolutely love your reactions to this show, and I've watched several! You make sure to empathize with both Shane and Ilya. Instead of judging either of them you try to understand where each is coming from. I see so many people try to protect Shane and get angry and judge Ilya especially in this episode. While I love and empathize with Shane, I find that my heart consistently goes out to Ilya. I think many people overlook Ilya’s perspective because he doesn’t project the same outward fragility as Shane. While Shane wears his emotions on his sleeve, Ilya’s devotion is found in his actions. His consistent pursuit not only shows vulnerability, but it also speaks volumes; he orchestrated their most pivotal moments—from the gym and the commercial to their first intimate connection. By taking the lead—requesting the hotel room number, initiating the first kiss, and maintaining three years of continuous contact before their sexual (intercourse ) relationship even began—Ilya demonstrated a profound, persistent desire to be close to Shane that is often misunderstood.
I apologize for the extremely long Ilya dissertation I'm about to write, but I'm obsessed with this show and especially by such a well-developed, well-written, and well-acted character like Ilya Rozanov. Here are a few instances in which I feel Ilya's motives and actions have either been misunderstood or mischaracterized; not by you, thankfully, but by so many people in general:
Russia: Figure Skating Scene in Russia:
I hated to see Shane hurt during this scene, but I tried to keep in mind that Ilya’s rejection was not meant to be cruel. Shane was just told very clearly in the previous scene that in Russia, homosexuality carries the risk of genuine physical danger, yet he still approaches Ilya (in a very obvious manner) Ilya is understandably hyper-vigilant about their safety and demands space three separate times "NOT HERE" "GO SIT DOWN" and " PLEASE GO" and Shane fails to read the subtext or respect the verbal warnings. When Shane said NOT HERE,", during the shower scene in Episode 1, Ilya respected Shane's boundaries and stopped immediately. Ilya simply needed that same level of respect in return. Shane’s difficulty reading the situation may be linked to him being on the spectrum (as per the author), but it doesn't change the fact that Ilya was setting and defending a necessary safety boundary. However, saying all that, it is heartbreaking that he ghosted Shane for 6 months. I understand the reasoning behind it, but without communication, Shane certainly doesn't.
Awards Show Bathroom Scene:
What is also often misinterpreted as an act of cruelty actually showcases a nuanced interaction where Ilya's harsh exterior breaks as soon as he realizes Shane is in pain. We often see Ilya use sarcastic (usually sexual) remarks as a defense mechanism. Once he notices how upset it makes Shane, he deliberately softens his voice and makes physical contact. He then gently grabs Shane's face and assumes the dominant position to help Shane cope with his out-of-control emotions. His dominance isn't about control; it’s about pulling Shane out of his own head. With a few calm instructions, Ilya anchored Shane, making it clear to him how much he looked forward to their evening together. He then passionately kissed him and wished him good luck, showing him just how much he truly cared.
Penthouse Scene - Dominant/ Submissive Dynamic
A lot of people mistakenly believe that their dom/sub dynamic inherently means that Shane is being manipulated or coerced. This couldn't be farther from the truth. A clear illustration of Shane's enjoyment is seen when Shane asks, Ilya 'Are you going to f*** me?' and Ilya responds, 'We will see" the distinct smile that appears on Shane's face at that moment highlights his genuine enjoyment of their dynamic. For Shane, Ilya's dominance offers a much-needed release, allowing him to finally let go of control in his otherwise rigid and highly structured world. Conversely, for Ilya, it provides a much-needed sense of order amidst a chaotic existence, essentially grounding him. It's a mutually beneficial relationship. Ilya would never coerce or manipulate Shane into doing anything he didn't want to do. This show has already highlighted how important consent is to Ilya.
Penthouse Post Sex a Russia "Conversation"
For Shane, home (Canada) is a source of pride and identity he wants to share. But for Ilya, Russia is a cage. While Shane sees a conversation starter, Ilya sees a reminder of his brother's homophobic slurs, the father he can never please, and the country that could threaten his very existence if they ever found out who he really was, The ultimate irony is that Shane brings up Russia because he loves Ilya and wants to know him deeper, but Russia is the very reason Ilya can never allow that love to be public or permanent. Every time Shane tries to get closer, he accidentally reminds Ilya of the walls that keep them apart.
Elevator "We Didn't Even Kiss" Scene:
In the elevator, we see Shane's realization that he has crossed the invisible line they established. He isn't mad at Ilya or their arrangement; he is panicked because his own developing feelings have made the "safe" distance of their hookups impossible to maintain. As a neurodivergent person defined by rigid discipline and control, that 'f***' was purely self-directed panic. He realizes he can no longer reconcile the intense feelings he has with the casual nature of their meetings, and he is angry at himself for becoming vulnerable in a way he didn't intend.
