Goddess Bless You From Death สิงสาลาตาย - Episode 2 | REACTION

Comments

the pronouns being used for meen are actually gender neutral in the dialog, the misgendering of her is an error on the part of whoever is doing the subtitles. subtitles misgendering characters is probably going to be a reoccurring thing since it's already occurred with meen and darin in the aired eps so far

After some research and contemplation, I don’t think the show is using a transgender character in a negative or…exploitative? way. The original work Goddess is based off of also has a trans victim (so the show wasn’t just throwing it in as a way to be inclusive). In Thailand, trans people are also much more accepted and integrated into society than they are here in the US, even if the government doesn’t grant name changing rights. So it could just be a way of reflecting ‘random’ victims from society of all ages and genders. I think the police are calling the character ‘the trans victim’ merely as an identifier without connotation and because they don’t know if it could be part of the victimology yet. Plus it is early in the series so identifying them by name would be confusing, but also probably misgendering because changing pronouns officially in Thailand isn’t done (in a roundabout way maybe the police referring to them as ‘the transgender victim’ is being more inclusive? 🤔). But also, some reading I did said that a person being transgender could have spiritual connotations depending on which religion and area of Thailand…a person being transgender could either be something karmic, a reason for them to make amends for “transgressions”, or could give them a “soft soul” which could make possession easier and make them better spiritual mediums. As I haven’t read the book, I wonder if these things will be brought in to play in the story and I’m curious to see if it will be deeper than a mere identifier.
