Oh I listened to several horror dnd stories where the dm would do an insert character and have him become this mary sue character that everyone totally loves. It is very easy to railroad the story this way. it's not impossible though

Besides, such an NPC can be used for a lot of reasons A safety net to assist new players or somewhat unbalanced teams A storytelling tool to assist the party along the story if they get stuck Maybe a plot point after the players, after getting attached, see him betray them, or even get killed. They don’t even need to be with the party all the time either, or even be the same person. honestly, my DM has quite a few of these in the campaigns he runs lmao
