[All Patrons] Just Passing Through Remastered Edition - Ashcroft

A once-fertile village now parched by drought, where resilience clings as tightly as the dust to its fields.

The road ahead dips toward a cluster of cottages and barns, their thatched roofs pale and brittle under the sun’s unrelenting glare. Fields stretch around the village, cracked and dusty, with little more than stubborn stalks clawing at the earth. Even the river beside it has been reduced to a muddy pit. Yet, despite the weary land, the villagers move with purpose—patching walls, carrying tools, and speaking in low but steady voices. Though the drought has clearly bitten deep, there is a quiet strength in the way they carry on, as if determination alone might summon the rains.

Ashcroft is a small rural village of about 250 people, nestled in a valley ordinarily known for its fertile soil and gentle climate. In better years, the surrounding farmland produces rich harvests of grain and vegetables, sustaining the community and providing surplus for trade. Life here has long been marked by stability and modest prosperity.

Ashcroft grew from a cluster of farmsteads established along a spring-fed stream, long since dried to little more than a trickle. For generations, its reputation as “the breadbasket of the valley” gave it modest influence beyond its size, and even small festivals celebrating planting and harvest once drew visitors from neighboring settlements.

Now, however, a prolonged drought affecting the Beaver River has reshaped the village. The fields are barren, the wells run shallow, and livestock falter. Grain stores shrink with each passing season, and trade has all but vanished. The villagers have not given in to despair, but their daily routines carry an edge of strain—conserving water, stretching food, and working harder to maintain what little remains.

Ashcroft is best portrayed as a community on the edge of hardship but not yet broken. Its people are lean, weary, and cautious, but still resilient. Outsiders are met with a wary mix of hope and suspicion: new faces might bring opportunity, aid, or danger. The drought defines everything here, but the resolve of the people gives Ashcroft a fragile sense of endurance, as though survival hangs on both the mercy of the skies and the stubborn will of its folk.
