[365 Days of Monsters] 001/365 - Chiro

Long horns, leathery wings, and a twisted, ghoulish face—it's no wonder these creatures are often mistaken for fiends. However, chiros—or batfolk, as they're often labeled—are actually humanoids.

Habitat/Society. Tribal creatures, chiros live in small family groups called cauldrons, ranging between 10-20 adults with half as many children. Cauldrons are usually led by their strongest warriors. It's not uncommon for a cauldron to be led by a rare albino chiro, however; these pale horrors have limited spellcasting ability. Most chiros live in The Low southwest of the Basilisk Spine Mountains. Arruquettans and Orbeans sometimes witness these human-sized bat creatures leaving their subterranean chambers to hunt.

Ecology. Chiros prefer to be left alone to their own devices. Should a threat arise that threatens their way of life, a cauldron might cooperate with other species of The Low (such as inaks or nethervampires) to repel such threats.

Special thanks to Matthew Twigg for the monster suggestion!

Comments

Flying is generally difficult to pull off as it tends to be a Tier 2 benefit. The easiest method would be to base it on the Aarakocra stat block from the Princes of the Apocalypse Player's Handbook and add in some of the other bits. Blindsight is pretty powerful at early levels, too, so be cognizant of that.

What are the odds of seeing this as a playable race? I can intuit much of the ASIs, abilities, etc., But your professional output is far superior to anything I can wrangle for home use.

I'm definitely going to run a campaign with these bad bois
