Monastic Tradition - Way of the Winter Warrior | New Player Option for Fifth Edition

Monks who follow the Way of the Winter Warrior train in the harshest parts of the world, particularly those subject to year-round freezing conditions. These disciplined fighters hone their skills to become defensive combatants capable of withstanding extreme punishment from the large and dangerous creatures native to polar environments.

The most famous school of Winter Warriors in Omeria were the Brothers of Xidar. Now extinct, this exclusively dark elf (or "drow" as the Rasgax call them) monastery created hundreds of monks who followed this tradition until they mysteriously vanished sometime around 500 AT.

Edit: Fixed the 17th level feature so it works a little better with the monk design. Also added in the action economy bit for the fog of frost.

Just the action

DM Dave

To confirm the Cold Strike ability is specifically for when you use your action to Dodge correct? Or does it synergize with spending a ki point for patient defense to get 2+ attacks and a Dodge action Ina single round?

Ciaran Chatwin

I just did it 1 for all. That way you kinda gotta pick and choose which ones you eat up.

DM Dave

I like the new approach. To address your concern, what about 1 ki point per 10 points absorbed?

I've replaced it with a blanket heal for now. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the idea of your allies spamming you with freezing ray, etc. so I'll probably work on that.

DM Dave

You can voluntarily replace temp hp if you receive temp hp from a new source. So, in theory, cold damage would “heal” lost temp hp. Likely I’ll change it though since I’m not totally happy with that as a capstone

DM Dave

Can you clarify how "Cold Absorption" works? Since it only triggers when "Winter's Armor" is in effect, how can you ever take advantage of the temporary hit points provided by "Cold Absorption" if those temporary hit points cannot stack with those from "Winter's Armor"? Does this mean that all of the temporary hit points that were provided by "Winter's Armor" need to have been consumed before "Cold Absorption" begins to add temporary hit points?

I love the monk class but not a lot of the monastic traditions are that good. This is awesome!

Adee

This is great! I've always been a fan of the unpopular Monk class. Being able to unarmed strike when you take the dodge action, then stunning strike (once you get to 5th level) could be a game changer. Well done!
