Shrine of the Emperor of Bones - New 1st Level Adventure for Fifth Edition

Shrine of the Emperor of Bones is a Fifth Edition adventure for four to five characters of 1st to 2nd-level, and is optimized for a party of five characters with an average party level (APL) of 1. This adventure is setting agnostic, meaning that you can easily place the adventure into any campaign setting or environment of your choice. Ideally, the shrine is hidden in a tropical environment such as a jungle or even under a town or city where water would easily flood its chambers.

Background

Once a noble's son with a promising future in arcane magic, the self-proclaimed emperor of bones destroyed himself and his followers during a necromantic ritual gone awry. Resurrected and driven by a compulsion to complete the ritual, the emperor continues his dark practices at the shrine that bears his name.

Shrine of the Emperor of Bones - New 1st Level Adventure for Fifth Edition

Comments

I wish there was a Fantasy grounds unity version

I was looking at a four-character party that would be going through this adventure so that would be my mistake. Though after reading your response here and I saw you talking about this adventure during the 2-hour encounter class, all be it brief, I feel like I need to try running the adventure as is and look to see if I'm just underestimating the players. Or finding someone else to be the fifth player. I cannot imagine I'm the first to make some asinine comment regarding one of your adventures nor be the last but I do appreciate your feedback and taking the time to respond.

Brad Thomson

Just to make sure, you are accounting fo the fact that it's written for five characters, right?

DM Dave

Nah, they're both fine. They're certainly tough, but not impossible. I played through the adventure a few times and watched some others play. Feel free to adjust 'em, though. It's your adventure. :D

DM Dave

Ok, so I spent some more time going over the Zombie Owlbear and Emperor Bones encounters and I come to the conclusion these are way out of line for a first-level party to handle. This adventure is a great, quick, little dungeon crawl for a beginner party and I would really enjoy running it but those two encounters really need to be reworked to be a reasonable challenge. I'm going to try and make some adjustments and see what comes from it but maybe it's worth taking another look at those encounters again.

Brad Thomson

Maybe I'm missing something here but in Room 1, Entrance I'm trying to see how four first-level characters can take on the CR 3 Zombie Owlbear and not get TPK when the creature is doing an average of 24 points per round.

Might just be me, but this map doesn't align very well in Roll20.net ?? Am i doing something wrong?

I believe they were and ran it as such. Fun dungeon, I combined this and vines into one opening adventure and it worked out pretty nicely

It appears that way to me as well! Overall though, loving the dungeon.

Am I right in thinking that rooms 4 and 3 have been mixed up?

Maybe I’m just not seeing it but I’m only seeing the link to the maps

Hey Antonio. It's right above the comments. :D

DM Dave

Just joined is there a pdf for this?

Awesome!

DM Dave

I really like that you incorporated the monsters into the Appendix. That makes for easy reference. Also like that this is a 1st Level adventure (I have been working up my own 1st Level adventure via GMBinder - just polishing it up at this point - a good way for me to get comfy with the 5E rules and such).

Whoopsie. I'll add the link to Dyson's page.

DM Dave

Do you have the player version of the map available as well?

Blair McMillan

Very cool being in the stream today and then seeing the finished product!
