Originally engineered as guards and defenders of the ancient cities of Elsath, dread apes eventually turned against their captors and fled into the wilderness. Centuries later, these intelligent creatures protect their territories with their powerful psychic abilities and strong relationships with mundane apes and other native fauna.

Dread Ape War Parties. Dread apes are almost always found accompanied by throngs of other apes who view the dread ape as their alpha. A dread ape war party usually consists of 1 dread ape leader and 2d4 + 2 apes. The war party might also include a giant ape in its ranks. Sometimes, the mundane apes may be outfitted with breast plate armor and shields (AC 18) and wielding spears. This makes them CR 1.
